legal sports betting in ohio overview

Ohio Legal Sports Betting Overview

Legal sports betting should arrive in the state of Ohio by the end of 2021. Ohio legislators are making a push to get legal gambling live in The Buckeye State by the end of the year. The timing of this move makes sense for several reasons.

Ohio is Surrounded by States with Legal Sports Betting

All of the states that share a border with Ohio already have legislation in place legalizing sports betting. This includes Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. With a large portion of the OH population less than a two-hour drive to legal sports betting, the state is already missing out on tax revenue from active sports bettors.

Ohio Is a Massive Sports Market

Ohio is the country's seventh-largest state by population and is a state that clearly loves its sports. They have two NFL teams (Browns and Bengals), an NBA team (Cavaliers), two NBA teams (Reds and Indians), an NHL team (Columbus Blue Jackets), and several Division 1 college teams.

The state also offers legal DFS which was actually signed into law in 2018 and has allowed gambling on horse racing since 1933.

When to Expect Legal Sports Betting in Ohio

So, when will legal sports betting officially be available to Ohio bettors? State legislators have been pushing to legalize sports betting by the end of 2021, but recent changes to the SB 176 have moved the proposed start date back to April 1, 2022.

The reason for the proposed delay, according to Kirk Schuring, chair of the Senate Select Committee on Gaming, is to allow all sportsbook operators to begin on equal footing when the market opens. This news was a win/lose for the state as they expanded the total number of licenses (both online and retail) but did so at the expense of the 2021 NFL season.

Unfortunately for Ohios sports fans that were hoping to bet on their football teams this season, this bill has seen little opposition and is expected to sail through the House. However, there is still a chance the House moves the start date back or even reduces the number of operators. As for now, we have to project the start date for legal betting in Ohio as April 1st, 2022.

Ohio SportsBooks FAQs

Ohio sports bettors have been eagerly awaiting the start of legal sports betting in their state for the better part of three years. It appears we have a tentative start date of April 1, 2022, which leaves plenty of time for new Ohio bettors to become familiar with how sports betting works, as well as the rules and regulations that will apply to their state.

The FAQs below address the majority of the major questions and concerns a new bettor may have.

Is sports betting legal in Ohio?

Not yet. Ohio legislators moved a bill through the state's senate in mid-June. The bill must next be passed by the house and signed into law by the Governor. As of now, the projected start date for legal sports betting in Ohio is April 1, 2022.

What sports will be legal to bet on in Ohio?

Once the bill is signed into law, the state will then establish the rules and regulations that govern the Ohio sports betting industry. Once agreed upon, the rules will be made public. We track the progress of every piece of sports betting legislation you can subscribe in the sidebar of this page to receive updates.

What sportsbook apps will be available in Ohio?

Given the number of skins available and relatively low cost of entry, we expect most major sportsbooks to enter the Ohio sports betting market. This includes: FanDuel, DraftKings, William Hill, BetMGM, Unibet, and BetRivers.

Are DFS sites like FanDuel and DraftKings legal in OH?

Yes, Ohio has offered legal, regulated daily fantasy sports since 2018. This means that while Ohio sports fans can't bet on the games, they can still compete in real money fantasy contests.
