Path to Legal Sports Betting in Louisiana

Louisiana sports fans should have legal sports betting by the start of the 2021 NFL season. Following voters voting overwhelmingly in favor of legal sports betting (55 of 64 parishes), the state's legislators have passed the necessary bills to make legal sports betting happen in The Pelican State.

The main bills of interest in Louisiana are HB697 and SB247. The first was signed into law by Governor John Bel Edwards on June 4th, the latter landed on his desk on June 11th. A third bill will be required to determine how the sports betting tax revenue is spent.

Given how fast the state was able to legalize sports betting, an early-September start date seems like a formality in Louisiana. Now our attention turns to what operators and sportsbooks will enter the LA market at launch.

What SportsBooks Will Operate in Louisiana?

Louisana sports bettors wondering what sportsbook choices they will have this fall should not have to wait much longer. Once the final sports betting bill is signed into law, sportsbooks will be able to apply for licenses.

There are three majors sports betting brands that are already heavily invested in the Louisana market. Representatives from FanDuel and DraftKings were both involved throughout the process of moving the sports betting bills into law. Additionally, Caesars Sportsbook recently signed a sponsorship deal with the New Orleans Saints and the Mercedes Benz Superdome.

The LA legislation calls for 20 licenses, one for every casino and racing venue in the state, and each license receives two skins. With that in mind, Lousiana sports bettors should have a wide variety of sportsbooks to choose from this fall. Beyond just FanDuel, DraftKings, and Caesars, we expect William Hill, BetMGM, BetRivers, PointsBet, and Barstool to all be active as soon as the Lousiana market opens.
