Golden State Valkyries vs. Connecticut Sun Prediction: Playoff-Bound Valkyries Face Reeling Sun

The Golden State Valkyries hit the road for a Wednesday night date with the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena, tipping off at 7:00 PM ET in a matchup that looks lopsided on paper but carries real stakes for the visitors. Golden State sits second in the Western Conference at 26-11, riding momentum into the stretch run as it jockeys with Las Vegas for playoff seeding behind the runaway Minnesota Lynx. Connecticut, on the other hand, has already been eliminated from postseason contention at 10-27, sitting seventh in the East, and is simply playing out the string in front of its home fans.

Despite the gulf in the standings, the Sun enter off a rare bright spot, having beaten the Chicago Sky 87-81 on Tuesday to snap a run of tough losses. Golden State, meanwhile, has won three of its last four, including an 80-66 road win over Minnesota on Monday that showed the Valkyries can hang with the league’s best when locked in defensively.

Where the Betting Market Sees This One Going

Bookmakers are not treating this as a competitive game. Golden State opened as roughly 12.5-to-13.5-point favorites depending on the book, with moneyline prices on the Valkyries ranging from -800 to as steep as -950, while Connecticut’s moneyline sits between +550 and +610. The total has been posted in the 150.5 to 152.5 range, with some early market movement toward the under as bettors weigh Connecticut’s league-worst 79.2 points-per-game offense against a Golden State defense that has been stingy on the road. The spread itself has been fairly stable in the -12.5 to -13.5 window, suggesting the market is confident in the talent gap but not so confident that anyone expects a total blowout in either direction on the number.

The Talent Gap Is Real, But Connecticut Has Shown Fight

Golden State’s case is straightforward: this is a deep, well-coached roster that has outscored opponents by 6.2 points per game this season and boasts one of the WNBA’s more balanced attacks. Gabby Williams leads the way at 14.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals a night, and she’s been red-hot lately, dropping 23 points in a win over Dallas and following that up with 15 more against Minnesota just two days ago. Point guard Veronica Burton has quietly had an excellent season as the engine of the offense, averaging 12.5 points and a team-best 5.6 assists while shooting better than 43% from the field. Forward Janelle Salaün adds another scoring option at 13.1 points per game on 42.3% shooting, giving the Valkyries three players capable of taking over a game on any given night.

Connecticut’s roster, by contrast, has been thin on both ends. The Sun rank near the bottom of the league defensively, allowing 86.9 points per game, and injuries have compounded the problem — center Olivia Nelson-Ododa is out with a knee issue, veteran center Brittney Griner is questionable with a knee ailment of her own, and guard Leila Lacan is away from the team through the FIBA World Cup window. What Connecticut does have is Aneesah Morrow, a bruising forward who has emerged as one of the bright spots of a lost season, averaging 11.7 points and 10.4 rebounds per game and coming off a double-double effort in Tuesday’s win over Chicago. If the Sun are going to make this competitive, it starts with Morrow controlling the glass and getting easy second-chance opportunities against a Golden State frontcourt that can be attacked on the boards.

History has not been kind to Connecticut in this series either — Golden State beat the Sun 97-70 back in May behind a balanced attack, with Williams scoring 15 and Burton adding 11 points and six assists in that meeting. The Valkyries’ defense forced a miserable shooting night from Connecticut in that game, and little about the roster situation for the Sun has improved since. Golden State also travels well, sitting at 11-6 on the road this season, a mark that speaks to a team built to win regardless of environment.

Prediction and Best Bet

Golden State’s combination of depth, recent form and defensive discipline should be too much for a shorthanded Connecticut team playing out a lost season. The Sun’s one-game win streak and Morrow’s rebounding will keep this from getting completely out of hand, but the Valkyries have the pieces to control the game from start to finish.

  • Prediction: Golden State Valkyries 88, Connecticut Sun 74
  • Best Bet: Golden State Valkyries -13.5

The Valkyries have covered spreads at a strong rate this season, and against a Connecticut roster missing key frontcourt pieces and already eliminated from the postseason race, the motivation and talent gaps both point toward Golden State comfortably clearing the number. Bettors looking to shop for the best number before tip-off should check DraftKings promo code offers, since even a slight difference in the spread matters on a game expected to be this lopsided.
