NFL Betting Odds FAQ

Have questions about NFL odds and how they work? Our team is here to help. Find answers to the most common questions we receive about how NFL odds work in the FAQ section found below.

How do NFL betting odds work?

NFL betting odds represent the likelihood of an event happening. In the U.S. odds are typically displayed in American format. This format shows how much one needs to bet to win a certain amount (negative odds) or how much one wins from a $100 bet (positive odds). For example, if the New England Patriots have odds of -150, you need to bet $150 to win $100; if they have odds of +150, a $100 bet wins you $150.

How are NFL odds determined?

Odds for NFL games are set by bookmakers, with the sole purpose of creating a betting environment where 50% of the handle (or total money bet) is on each side of the wager. Oddsmakers use complex algorithms and computer models to predict game outcomes and set initial lines.

Why do NFL betting odds change over time?

The odds set by sportsbooks at the open will constantly change throughout the week. Going back to how odds are determined, bookmakers will adjust odds to encourage bettors to take the other side of a wager. For instance, if the majority of bets are on the Kansas City Chiefs -6.5 points, bookmakers could adjust the line to -7.5 points to get action on the other side.

What is VIG (or juice) in NFL betting, and why is it important?

VIG, or juice, is the commission that sportsbooks charge on bets. VIG is built into the odds and is why the total of no bet is ever 100%. For instance, both sides of a spread bet will pay out -110 odds, which means that if 50% of bets are on both sides of the wager, the sportsbook makes a 10% profit. Lower juice means higher payouts and more money back to the player.

Why is it important to shop for the best NFL betting odds before placing a bet?

Shopping for the best available odds is a critical step to becoming a successful NFL bettor. Different sportsbooks offer different odds and juice for every wager. This means you can often find both a better line and higher payout by simply betting with the sportsbook that offers the best odds.
