Yankees vs. Angels Prediction: New York Looks to Bounce Back at Angel Stadium

The New York Yankees head into Angel Stadium of Anaheim on Tuesday night looking to right the ship after a rough series opener against a last-place Angels club that has nothing to lose. New York enters at 78-60 and sits second in the AL East, 4.5 games behind Tampa Bay, while holding a comfortable cushion in the American League Wild Card race. Los Angeles, by contrast, is buried at 53-85 in the AL West cellar, 17 games back with little beyond pride and player development to play for over the season’s final month. First pitch is scheduled for 9:38 p.m. ET, with Gerrit Cole taking the ball for New York against Grayson Rodriguez for the Angels.

Monday’s series opener went the Angels’ way in lopsided fashion, a reminder that even a rebuilding club can land haymakers in September when a Yankees rotation is banged up and mixing and matching. New York still controls the bigger picture, comfortably positioned for October, but manager Aaron Boone’s group has dropped consecutive series against inferior competition and can’t afford to let a soft schedule turn into a losing habit heading into a stretch run that includes San Diego and Colorado next.

Where the Betting Market Stands

Sportsbooks have installed the Yankees as sizable favorites for the rematch, with moneyline prices in the range of -170 to -190 depending on the book, while the Angels sit around +150 to +162 as the road-underdog value play. The run line has New York at -1.5 and Los Angeles at +1.5, and the total has settled around 7.5 runs. That number reflects two offenses trending in different directions: New York’s lineup has scored in bunches for most of the season, while the Angels have struggled to generate consistent traffic on the bases, particularly with several regulars sidelined. Bettors weighing the total should note Cole’s tendency to work efficiently deep into games when his command is on, which tends to push these matchups toward the under unless the Angels bullpen implodes early.

Public money has leaned toward New York given the gap in overall record, but the -1.5 run line carries some risk given how well the Angels have played at home recently and the fact that Monday’s result showed this Los Angeles roster is capable of stringing together a complete offensive game against a taxed Yankees pitching staff. Bettors newer to run-line wagering may want to brush up on our MLB betting guide before deciding how to size this one.

Cole vs. Rodriguez and the Health Report

Cole enters at 7-7 with a 3.19 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and 105 strikeouts, numbers that undersell how dominant he’s looked in his better starts down the stretch. He’ll be opposed by Grayson Rodriguez, who is 4-5 with a 6.03 ERA and a bloated 1.52 WHIP, numbers that put the Angels in a tough spot from the jump. If Cole locates his fastball and slider early, this has the look of a start where New York’s lineup builds a cushion and coasts.

New York is still dealing with a lengthy injury list that has sapped some thump from the middle of the order. Aaron Judge remains on the 60-day injured list with a rib stress fracture and isn’t expected back until closer to Sept. 8, while Giancarlo Stanton (calf) is out for an extended stretch as well. Ryan Weathers (forearm) and Fernando Cruz (elbow) round out the rotation and bullpen absences, and Ryan McMahon is working his way back from a thumb sprain. Even without those names, the Yankees’ remaining lineup pieces have more than enough juice to feast on a depleted Angels pitching staff.

Los Angeles has its own laundry list of absences complicating things further. Nolan Schanuel (oblique), Gustavo Campero (hamstring), Yoán Moncada (knee) and reliever Sam Bachman (forearm) are all sidelined, thinning out a lineup that was already overmatched against a contender’s rotation. Rookie shortstop prospects and fill-ins have been asked to soak up a heavy workload in September, and that inexperience tends to show up against a pitcher of Cole’s caliber. The Angels have dropped eight of their last ten games overall, a stretch that speaks to just how difficult it’s been to find consistency with this many regulars unavailable.

Other Game Picks

Head-to-head history this season has favored New York more often than not, and the season series has been competitive without being one-sided, but New York’s roster depth and rotation talent give it a clear edge in a get-right spot after an ugly loss. Fans tracking the Angels’ odds page for the rest of the series will find the value gap between these two clubs reflected clearly in the market pricing for Tuesday’s game.

Prediction and Best Bet

Cole should be sharp after a few extra days of rest, and the Yankees’ lineup, even missing Judge and Stanton, has enough firepower to pull away from an Angels club playing out the string with several key regulars unavailable. Los Angeles has shown flashes, including Monday’s outburst, but doing that on back-to-back nights against a frontline starter is a tall order.

  • Prediction: New York Yankees 6, Los Angeles Angels 2
  • Best Bet: Yankees -1.5 on the run line

The gap in starting pitching quality is simply too wide to ignore, and with New York needing to erase the sting of Monday’s loss, expect Cole and the Yankees’ lineup to deliver a comfortable, multi-run margin that covers the run line.
