White Sox vs. Guardians ALDS Game 2 Prediction: Can Cleveland Even the Series?

The Chicago White Sox arrive at Progressive Field on Monday holding something nobody expected them to have in October: a 1-0 lead in the American League Division Series over the Cleveland Guardians. Chicago finished the regular season 84-78, second in the AL Central, while Cleveland won the division at 85-77. But after Game 1’s stunning 3-0 shutout, the pecking order has flipped, at least for now. First pitch for Game 2 is scheduled for 5:00 PM ET on TBS/truTV, with the series shifting to Chicago for Games 3 and 4 and a potential Game 5 back in Cleveland on Saturday.

Game 1 was supposed to be a showcase for Parker Messick, the Guardians’ breakout left-hander who posted a 2.81 ERA in four regular-season starts against the White Sox. Instead, Chicago’s bullpen game — anchored by opener Hagen Smith and closer Grant Taylor — limited Cleveland to three hits. Munetaka Murakami’s two-run homer in the fourth proved to be all the offense the White Sox needed. Now the Guardians need a response, and manager Stephen Vogt is turning to his best remaining arm to get it.

Where the Line Has Moved After Game 1

Oddsmakers still see Cleveland as the favorite in this game, even while trailing the series. The Guardians opened around -162 to -164 on the moneyline, with the White Sox sitting at +130 to +135 as road underdogs. The run line has Cleveland -1.5 (+143 to +155) against White Sox +1.5 (-174 to -184), and the total sits at 6.5 runs. That gap reflects both Progressive Field’s recent cool, wind-aided conditions and the fact that Chicago is turning to an opener again rather than a true frontline starter, while Cleveland counters with one of the American League’s premier power arms. Bettors weighing the moneyline against the run line should brush up on MLB betting guide fundamentals before deciding how to play a tight postseason number like this one.

Gavin Williams Looks to Save Cleveland’s Season

The Guardians are handing the ball to right-hander Gavin Williams, who finished second in the majors in strikeouts with 248 and set career highs in starts (32) and innings pitched (184 1/3) during the regular season. Williams posted a 3.76 ERA and was especially sharp down the stretch, posting a 2.54 ERA with 44 strikeouts and just 12 walks across five September starts. His last outing, on September 25 against Kansas City, was an outlier — four runs allowed on five hits and four walks in just 3 1/3 innings — but he threw a 70-pitch simulated game during the ALDS off-day to shake off any rust. Notably, 50.6 percent of the earned runs Williams allowed this season came via the home run, the sixth-highest rate among pitchers with at least 150 innings, which could matter against a Chicago lineup that has already shown pop in this series.

Chicago, meanwhile, is once again deploying left-hander Anthony Kay as an opener, with Sean Burke lined up as the bulk reliever behind him. Burke has been nearly untouchable against Cleveland this season, going 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA across three appearances (two starts), striking out 21 against just three walks in 17 1/3 innings. If Burke gives the White Sox length, it puts real pressure on a Guardians offense that managed only three hits in Game 1.

Cleveland’s lineup is counting on its hottest hitters to wake up. Steven Kwan led all of MLB in batting average after the All-Star break at .353, though he’s just 2-for-15 across his last four postseason games. Travis Bazzana, the rookie second baseman, was arguably Cleveland’s best hitter in the stretch run — he hit .280 with six home runs and a .978 OPS over his final 23 regular-season games, giving the middle of the Guardians’ order real thump entering October. Angel Martínez also enters with momentum, batting .296 with five homers and a .953 OPS over his final 20 games. José Ramírez remains the engine of this lineup, and how he’s pitched around by Chicago’s relief-heavy approach will shape much of the game’s tenor.

On the other side, closer Cade Smith has been Cleveland’s rock all year, posting a 1.95 ERA over 69 appearances and tying for the MLB lead with 41 saves. He’s thrown 15 scoreless innings over his last five appearances dating back through the stretch run, including five scoreless postseason innings. If Williams can get Cleveland into the sixth or seventh with a lead, the Guardians have as good a shutdown option as anyone will face this October. The margin for error, though, is thin — Cleveland cannot afford to go down 2-0 with the series moving to Chicago for Games 3 and 4.

Prediction and Best Bet

Chicago’s bullpen approach has neutralized the Guardians’ lineup once already, and Sean Burke’s dominant history against Cleveland this season makes him a real threat to do it again if called upon for length. But facing elimination from a 0-2 hole is a different kind of desperation, and Williams has the stuff to keep Cleveland’s lineup from completely cratering a second straight game. Expect the Guardians’ top bats to find more traction this time, with Cade Smith locking down the finish at home.

  • Prediction: Cleveland Guardians 5, Chicago White Sox 3
  • Best Bet: Guardians on the moneyline

Cleveland’s track record at home, Williams’ strikeout upside, and the simple reality of needing to even the series before heading to Chicago make the Guardians the right side here, even at a moneyline price that asks bettors to lay a bit of juice.
