White Sox vs. Astros Prediction: Can Chicago Steal Game 1 of the Wild Card Series?

The American League Wild Card round kicks off Tuesday at Daikin Park, and it’s hard to imagine a stranger pairing than this one. The Houston Astros are hosting Game 1 with the worst record of any team to win a division in the wild-card era, having clinched the AL West at a flat 81-81 over the weekend on a tiebreaker with the Texas Rangers. Waiting for them are the Chicago White Sox, a team that lost 100-plus games as recently as two years ago and is now making its first playoff appearance since 2021 after closing the regular season on an 84-78 mark, good for second in the AL Central behind Cleveland. First pitch from Houston is set for 5:00 PM ET in a best-of-three series that starts with two teams trending in very different directions.

Houston limped into October, going just 5-5 over its last 10 games even with a division title on the line, while Chicago enters riding real momentum — a 7-3 mark over its final 10 and three straight series wins to close the year, including a Sunday finale win over Colorado that sealed the South Siders’ return to the postseason. The Astros have been here plenty of times before, with nine trips to October in the last 10 years, but this roster looks nothing like the powerhouses of years past. The White Sox, by contrast, are the clear underdog on paper who might actually be the healthier, hotter team walking into Game 1.

The Betting Market Isn’t Buying the Longshot Script

Books still have Houston as the favorite here, but it’s a modest one given the circumstances. The Astros are sitting around -126 on the moneyline with the White Sox priced near +108 to +115 depending on the sportsbook, and the run line has Houston at -1.5 (+152 to +163) against Chicago’s +1.5 (-175 to -184). The total sits at 8 to 8.5 runs, reflecting two lineups that combined for well over 400 home runs this season but neither of which boasts a true frontline starter for this game.

That number matters here because both managers are handing the ball to bullpen-style options rather than traditional aces. It’s a pricing structure that suggests the market sees this as closer to a coin flip than the moneyline alone implies, and bettors shopping around have found the White Sox priced as generously as +115 at some shops — a number worth grabbing if you like the underdog angle. For bettors newer to postseason baseball, brushing up on an MLB betting guide before placing a wild-card wager is never a bad idea, especially with two bullpen games muddying the total.

Bullpen Games and Yordan Alvarez Loom Largest

Neither team is turning to a conventional starter in this one. The White Sox are giving the ball to rookie left-hander Hagen Smith, who has been nothing short of sensational since his August call-up — a 1.29 ERA across 28 innings overall, and a microscopic 0.41 ERA with a 32-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 22 innings since arriving in the majors. He’s shown he can handle multiple innings, having already thrown three scoreless frames against Pittsburgh and worked out of Chicago’s bullpen-game concept before. Houston counters with AJ Blubaugh, who led all of MLB in relief innings this season with 96 and posted a 3.66 ERA across 64 appearances. Manager Joe Espada has confirmed the Astros will run a full bullpen game behind him, and Blubaugh has rarely gone more than two innings in a single outing down the stretch.

Offensively, this series runs through one player: Yordan Alvarez. The Astros’ presumptive AL MVP hit .316 with 42 home runs, 106 RBI and a 1.033 OPS this season, finishing second in the American League in hits with 179. But Houston’s issue all year has been the lack of support around him — the rest of the lineup outside Alvarez has produced a modest .233/.300/.396 line, meaning if Chicago’s pitching plan is built around neutralizing one bat, the Astros’ offense could stall out completely. On the other side, Chicago’s lineup has gotten hot at the right time. Munetaka Murakami has 35 home runs, and outfielder Randal Grichuk enters the postseason locked in, hitting .333/.362/.635 with 10 extra-base hits in September alone — numbers that make him one of the most dangerous complementary bats in this series, particularly against right-handed pitching.

The head-to-head history from earlier this month favors Chicago slightly. The two teams met in a three-game set in Houston September 1-3, with the White Sox taking two of three, including a 5-1 win in the opener. Alvarez was quiet in that series relative to his season norms, managing just a couple of hits without leaving the yard, which lines up with the larger concern for Houston: if their MVP gets contained even briefly, this offense doesn’t have a reliable second option to pick up the slack.

Other Game Picks

Prediction and Best Bet

This game sets up as tighter than the moneyline suggests. Houston has the more explosive top-of-the-lineup threat in Alvarez and the win to close the year, but Chicago arrives with the better recent form, a rookie starter pitching over his head in the best possible way, and a lineup getting timely production from complementary hitters like Grichuk and Murakami. In a bullpen-game environment where both sides are piecing things together after the first few innings, the team playing loose and hot has an edge.

  • Prediction: Chicago White Sox 5, Houston Astros 4
  • Best Bet: White Sox on the moneyline

Getting a plus-money price on the team with the better recent form and a genuinely dominant rookie arm on the mound is too much value to pass up, even on the road against a division winner.
