Reds vs. Brewers Prediction: Milwaukee Chases Homefield Behind Chase Burns Duel

The Cincinnati Reds close out a series finale at American Family Field on Sunday afternoon already eliminated from wild-card contention, while the Milwaukee Brewers keep their eyes on a much bigger prize than the NL Central crown they clinched days ago. First pitch is set for 2:10 p.m. ET, with Milwaukee (93-56) riding the best record in baseball and looking to pad its cushion over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for home-field advantage throughout the National League playoffs. Cincinnati (69-79) enters on a five-game losing streak, its season now a matter of pride and evaluation rather than October stakes.

How the Market Sees a Lopsided Finale

Oddsmakers have installed the Brewers as roughly -200 favorites on the moneyline, with Cincinnati sitting around +165 to +169 depending on the book. The run line has Milwaukee at -1.5 and the Reds getting a point and a half back, with the total sitting near 8 runs. That gap reflects the gulf between these two clubs down the stretch — Milwaukee has won five of its last 10 games with a soft patch mixed in, but Cincinnati has been outscored badly in September, including a 12-8 and 20-0 split of results against this same Brewers club just over a week ago. The market isn’t just pricing in the standings; it’s pricing in a Reds offense that has gone cold and a Brewers lineup that keeps finding ways to win.

Chase Burns Takes the Ball With Restrictions

Cincinnati sends its best arm to the mound in Chase Burns, who has quietly turned in one of the more underrated seasons in the National League. The 23-year-old right-hander is 15-3 with a 2.73 ERA and 176 strikeouts across 27 starts, numbers that rank him among the league’s strikeout leaders. But Burns won’t be allowed to work deep into this one — Reds manager Terry Francona has been closely monitoring his innings late in the year after Burns dealt with a right elbow flexor strain that cost him time as a rookie in 2025. Burns threw only 44 pitches in his last outing against the Dodgers, a clear sign the Reds are prioritizing his long-term health over squeezing out extra innings in a lost season. Robert Gasser gets the ball for Milwaukee, working to a 4-5 record and 4.43 ERA in a rotation spot behind ace-caliber arms like Freddy Peralta. Gasser has been solid rather than spectacular, but with this much run support behind him, he doesn’t need to be dominant to pick up a win.

The lineups tell the rest of the story. Elly De La Cruz remains a threat at the top of Cincinnati’s order, hitting for power with 26 home runs and a .511 slugging percentage, and Sal Stewart has emerged as a legitimate middle-of-the-order bat with 31 homers. But the depth simply isn’t there behind them, and Cincinnati has managed only 620 runs scored on the year against 766 allowed — a run differential of -146 that ranks among the worst in the National League. Milwaukee, by contrast, has scored 775 runs while allowing only 579, a plus-196 differential that underscores just how complete this roster is from top to bottom. Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang and William Contreras give the Brewers three above-average bats before the lineup even turns over, and Christian Yelich remains a dangerous presence in the middle of the order even in a down offensive year by his standards.

What’s Actually at Stake for Milwaukee

The Brewers wrapped up their fourth consecutive NL Central title earlier this month and now sit just a game and a half ahead of the Dodgers for the best record in baseball — the prize that matters most with October approaching. That distinction guarantees home-field advantage throughout the NL bracket, so Milwaukee has every incentive to keep pushing even with the division locked up. Manager Pat Murphy’s club has been one of the sport’s most consistent units all season, and finishing off a series sweep of a last-place opponent is exactly the kind of business a contender wants to take care of before the games start meaning something entirely different.

Prediction and Best Bet

Cincinnati’s pitching depth and offensive punch simply don’t match up well against a Brewers team playing for playoff positioning rather than survival. Burns can keep this respectable for a handful of innings, but a short leash on his pitch count means Milwaukee’s lineup will get chances against Cincinnati’s bullpen, which has been stretched thin during the recent losing skid.

  • Prediction: Brewers 6, Reds 3
  • Best Bet: Brewers on the moneyline

With a division champion motivated by playoff seeding and a Reds team playing out the string with a limited starter, Milwaukee’s combination of health, depth and stakes makes the moneyline the safest angle in this one, even at a shorter price.
