Mets vs. Yankees Prediction: Subway Series Game 2 Pits Cole Against a Yankee Bullpen Riding High

The Subway Series shifts to Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon with first pitch set for 1:35 p.m. ET, and the two New York clubs are living in completely different realities right now. The Yankees (85-62) are locked in a fight to hold second place in the AL East, sitting three games back of the Rays but riding a four-game winning streak into the weekend. The Mets (68-79) are playing out the string in last place in the NL East, 18.5 games back, with little beyond pride and roster evaluation on the line. Friday’s opener went the home team’s way, with the Yankees grinding out a 6-4 win behind Carlos Rodon to take a 1-0 series lead, and now Gerrit Cole gets the ball trying to close it out before Sunday’s finale.

What the Betting Market Is Saying

Oddsmakers have made the Yankees fairly heavy favorites for a divisional-style rivalry game, with New York’s moneyline sitting around -174 to -185 depending on the book, while the Mets check in as roughly +148 to +163 underdogs. The run line has the Yankees at -1.5 (+115 to +125) against a Mets club getting the extra run and a half at +1.5 (-135 to -142), reflecting the market’s expectation that the Yankees win this one but not necessarily by a comfortable margin. The total sits at 8.5, with the over drawing the bulk of the public money — a reasonable lean given both bullpens have had their moments this month and Yankee Stadium’s short porch in right field is always in play. Bettors weighing this total against the run line might find it worth brushing up on our MLB betting guide before locking anything in.

Cole’s Track Record and a Lineup Built Around Ben Rice

Gerrit Cole takes the mound for the Yankees at 8-8 with a 3.41 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP, numbers that undersell how dominant he’s capable of being on his best days but also reflect a Yankees offense and bullpen that haven’t always cashed in his starts. He’ll be opposed by rookie right-hander Zach Thornton, who is 3-5 with a 3.53 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP in his first taste of the majors — a solid debut season, but he’s making his first career start against this Mets lineup’s crosstown rival in front of a hostile Bronx crowd.

The bigger story for New York’s offense might be Ben Rice. The 27-year-old designated hitter has emerged as the Yankees’ most productive bat this season, hitting .256 with 37 home runs and 89 RBI, both figures that lead the club outright and rank him among the American League’s top sluggers at his position. Rice has been especially dangerous with the short porch in right field working in his favor, and with Giancarlo Stanton sidelined on the 60-day injured list with a calf injury, Rice has taken on an even bigger share of the middle-of-the-order workload.

On the pitching side, the numbers heavily favor the home team. New York’s staff owns MLB’s best team ERA at 3.20, compared to a 4.19 mark for the Mets that ranks 17th in baseball, and the Yankees have also allowed the fewest hits and the second-most home runs hit by their own bats at 199 on the season. Cam Schlittler, who isn’t pitching Saturday but starts Sunday’s finale, leads the staff with a 2.01 ERA and 220 strikeouts, underscoring the depth New York can turn to as the Mets try to simply survive the weekend.

Injuries complicate things further for the visitors. Jorge Polanco is out for the season on the 60-day injured list with an ankle issue, and third baseman Brett Baty is day-to-day with a knee problem, thinning out an already offense that ranks in the bottom third of the league in batting average and OPS. Juan Soto remains the one legitimate middle-of-the-order threat for the Mets, sitting at 24 home runs on the year, but he’s not getting much protection around him with Polanco out and Baty banged up.

The Yankees aren’t fully healthy either — Jazz Chisholm Jr. is dealing with a thumb injury, reliever Kristian Castro is out for the year following elbow surgery, and Trent Grisham is nursing a hamstring strain — but their overall roster depth and rotation stability give them a clear edge over a Mets team that’s already shifted into evaluation mode for 2027.

Prediction and Best Bet

Cole doesn’t need to be dominant here; he just needs to keep the Mets’ lineup off balance long enough for Rice and company to do damage against a rookie starter making his first career appearance in this rivalry. Expect the Yankees’ superior pitching depth and lineup firepower to carry the day in front of a big Bronx crowd.

  • Prediction: Yankees 6, Mets 3
  • Best Bet: Yankees on the moneyline

With Cole on the mound, home-field energy at Yankee Stadium, and a Mets offense missing key bats, laying the moneyline price is the more comfortable play than sweating a run-and-a-half spread against a team that’s shown it can still scratch across runs in bunches.
