Guardians vs. Rays Prediction: ALCS Game 6 Pick and Best Bet for October 19
The Tampa Bay Rays are one win from the World Series, and they get to chase it at home. Game 6 of the American League Championship Series is set for Monday, October 19, at 8:08 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field, with Tampa Bay (98-64) leading Cleveland (85-77) three games to two. The Guardians won Games 1 and 3, but the Rays have answered with back-to-back wins at Progressive Field, a 7-3 victory on Saturday and a 3-1 win on Sunday, to flip the series.
Cleveland now needs to win Monday and Tuesday to advance, and the early signs say the Guardians will have to do it without much help from their pitching staff. The team is expected to go with a bullpen game in Game 6 and save right-hander Gavin Williams for a potential Game 7.
Rays Priced as Clear Home Favorites in a Win-or-Go-Home Spot
The market has leaned toward Tampa Bay all week, and Game 6 is no different. DraftKings had the Rays around -143 to -147 on the moneyline with Cleveland sitting near +119 to +122, and the total is set at 6.5 runs. The run line has the Rays at -1.5 with a plus-money payout, which tells you the books see a one-run game as a real possibility even with Tampa Bay favored to win.
Before you chase a price, it helps to understand how betting odds work and what a -145 favorite implies, which is roughly a 59 percent chance to win. Home field matters in that number. The Rays went 55-26 at Tropicana Field in the regular season, and one thing to watch is the Cleveland starter announcement, since a late pitching change could nudge the line.
Peralta vs. a Taxed Cleveland Bullpen
The biggest edge in this game is on the mound. Tampa Bay is sending right-hander Freddy Peralta, who is 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA this postseason and has allowed just one run, a solo homer against the Yankees. He threw six innings of four-hit ball in Game 2 of this series and has 6.2 scoreless innings across two outings against Cleveland. He also closed the regular season on a tear, posting a 0.79 ERA over his final six starts as the Rays won all six.
Cleveland has not named a starter, and a bullpen game is a tough ask on the heels of this stretch. Lefty Parker Messick lasted fewer than four innings in Game 5, and Foster Griffin also went fewer than four in Game 4, which means Cleveland’s relievers have been leaned on several days in a row. The Guardians’ best chance is to get a quick start from a bulk arm and keep the game close into the middle innings, then lean on the lineup to scratch out runs.
That lineup has some answers. Jose Ramirez is hitting .324 this postseason with seven hits in this series, and he is 2-for-6 in his career against Peralta. Chase DeLauter drove in Cleveland’s lone run in Game 5 and took Drew Rasmussen deep in the sixth inning. Even so, Cleveland managed just one run on Sunday, and Peralta is a much tougher assignment than most.
Tampa Bay’s Contact Offense and the Simpson Factor
The Rays do not just rely on the long ball. Tampa Bay finished with the second-best batting average in the majors during the regular season and is hitting .232 in the playoffs, third among postseason clubs. Junior Caminero led the way with 42 home runs and 101 RBI in the regular season, and the Rays have gotten key contributions from Nick Martinez, Jonathan Aranda and Yandy Diaz, whose two-run homer in the ninth sealed Game 4.
Speedy left fielder Chandler Simpson is an interesting piece of the puzzle against a thin bullpen. Simpson, who wears number 14, hit .306 with 46 stolen bases in the regular season. He sat against left-handed starters earlier in the series, but with the Guardians likely to turn to multiple arms, he is a good bet to get on base and put pressure on a tired pitching staff.
The Rays also have the injury edge on paper. Cleveland is without first baseman Rhys Hoskins, who is on the 10-day injured list, and relievers Colin Holderman and Andrew Walters are out. Tampa Bay’s injured list is mostly long-term relievers and depth pieces, which keeps its core lineup intact for this one.
Prediction and Best Bet
Tampa Bay has the better starter, the stronger home record, and a Cleveland pitching staff that is running on fumes. Cleveland has shown it can win in this building, taking Game 1 at Tropicana Field, and a bullpen game can sometimes get lucky, but the Rays are the right side here and should close the series.
- Prediction: Rays 5, Guardians 2
- Best Bet: Rays on the moneyline
Peralta has been nearly unhittable against this lineup, Tampa Bay has handled the Guardians’ bullpen over the past two games, and the Rays have been dominant at home all season. The price is not cheap at around -145, but this is the most comfortable way to play a team that holds every advantage on the field.
