Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks Prediction: Can Arizona Complete the Sweep at Chase Field?

The Los Angeles Dodgers arrive at Chase Field on Saturday night riding one of the worst stretches of their season, and the Arizona Diamondbacks smell blood. Los Angeles still sits atop the NL West at 69-47, but a stunning seven-game losing streak has completely changed the tenor of this series. Arizona, sitting 7.5 games back at 62-55, got a two-run homer late from Ryan Waldschmidt to seal a 4-3 win on Friday night, Arizona’s fourth win in five games. First pitch Saturday is set for 8:10 PM ET, and the Diamondbacks have a real chance to turn a series into a full-blown statement sweep.

The Betting Market Isn’t Buying the Freefall Just Yet

Despite the seven straight losses, Los Angeles remains the favorite here, priced around -176 to -180 on the moneyline with Arizona sitting near +148 to +153 as the home dog. The run line has the Dodgers at -1.5 and the total sits at 8.5 runs. That gap tells you the market still respects the talent gap between these two rosters, even with the Dodgers losing seven in a row and going just 2-8 over their last 10 games. Bettors still working out how betting odds work should note how much shorter that Dodgers price is relative to their recent form. But bettors chasing that number should note the Diamondbacks have already beaten Los Angeles once in this series and are getting a discount price against a team that has forgotten how to win.

Yamamoto Looks to Snap the Skid Against a Red-Hot Pfaadt

Los Angeles hands the ball to Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who has quietly put together an outstanding season at 11-7 with a 2.76 ERA, a 0.88 WHIP and 121 strikeouts over 133.2 innings. Yamamoto has been the stabilizing presence in a rotation that has been gutted by injury, with both Blake Snell (elbow) and Tyler Glasnow (back) on the 60-day injured list and unavailable. The Dodgers are also without starting catcher Will Smith, who is out with a neck injury, forcing manager Dave Roberts to lean on a shorthanded lineup during the worst slide of the year.

Arizona counters with Brandon Pfaadt, who has been nothing short of dominant in his own right at 6-1 with a 3.66 ERA. Pfaadt has thrived as the Diamondbacks have needed length from him more than ever, especially with the rotation banged up. Zac Gallen remains out with elbow inflammation that has him on the 60-day injured list, Corbin Burnes is still working back from Tommy John surgery, and Merrill Kelly exited Friday’s win early with a right leg cramp, adding even more uncertainty to an Arizona staff that has managed to win in spite of the attrition. Interim ace Mike Soroka is also unavailable with a lower body issue that has him sidelined into at least mid-August.

Offensively, the story is Shohei Ohtani, who leads the Dodgers with 26 home runs and is hitting .297 with a .953 OPS, but he hasn’t been able to carry L.A. out of its funk alone. Freddie Freeman is hitting .310, and Max Muncy has 22 homers, yet the Dodgers have managed just a handful of runs across their last several games. On the other side, Ketel Marte has been one of the most disruptive bats in this series, hitting for a .274 average with 15 home runs and 47 RBI in his career against Los Angeles specifically, and Corbin Carroll continues to provide thump at the top of Arizona’s order with 16 homers on the year. Gabriel Moreno has also been a steady presence behind the plate, hitting .302 and playing a key role in an Arizona lineup that has out-produced its record for stretches this summer.

The head-to-head numbers matter here too. Arizona has already taken one of two meetings in this set, and the Diamondbacks have won four of their last five games overall, a sharp contrast to a Dodgers team that has lost seven straight and has been outscored badly during the stretch. When a slumping favorite runs into a hot home underdog with a quality starter on the mound, the value tends to shift toward the team playing with more confidence, and right now that’s Arizona.

Prediction and Best Bet

The Dodgers have too much star power to count out entirely, and Yamamoto gives them a real chance to snap the skid against a Diamondbacks lineup that can be beaten by good pitching. But betting against a seven-game losing streak on the road, against a team playing loose and swinging hot bats at home, is a tough ask. Arizona’s pitching has been the more reliable unit over the past two weeks, and Pfaadt has been excellent all season.

Other Game Picks

  • Prediction: Diamondbacks 5, Dodgers 4
  • Best Bet: Diamondbacks on the moneyline

Fading a struggling favorite that’s lost seven straight while their opponent gets a discounted price and a pitcher who’s been nearly unhittable this season makes Arizona the value play here, and the Diamondbacks should have enough offense to complete the upset at home.
