Cubs vs. Royals Prediction: Chicago Looks to Complete Series Win at Kauffman Stadium

The Chicago Cubs close out their weekend series against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium, with first pitch set for 2:10 PM ET. Chicago enters the finale sitting second in the NL Central at 68-49, four and a half games back of the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers but firmly in the thick of a National League Wild Card race. Kansas City, meanwhile, has long since fallen out of postseason contention at 48-69, sitting fifth in the AL Central and 12 games off the pace. The Royals did salvage Saturday’s game, winning 6-3 after dropping the series opener, but this matchup is still very much about a contender trying to bank a series win against a team playing out the string.

Where the Market Sees This One Going

Bettors have made the Cubs clear road favorites for the finale, with moneyline pricing hovering between -128 and -158 depending on the book, while the Royals sit as significant underdogs in the +106 to +140 range. Chicago is also being laid at -1.5 on the run line at most shops, meaning bettors backing the Cubs need them to win by at least two runs for the spread bet to cash. The total has bounced between 8.5 and 10 runs across different sportsbooks, reflecting some uncertainty about how Sunday’s pitching matchup will play out compared to Saturday’s outing, which finished well under similar numbers. Books have consistently favored Chicago throughout the series, and that has held true even after Kansas City’s win on Saturday, a sign the market still views the Cubs as the deeper, more complete roster. Boyd’s Strong Season Meets a Suddenly Stingy Royals Bullpen

Chicago hands the ball to left-hander Matthew Boyd, who has been one of the more reliable arms in their rotation all year at 7-1 with a 3.59 ERA and 63 strikeouts. Boyd has given the Cubs a chance to win nearly every time out, and Chicago is 7-1 this season when he takes the mound as the moneyline favorite. He’ll face a Kansas City lineup that has scuffled for most of the summer, ranking near the bottom of the league in ERA allowed and OPS against as a pitching staff, but one that has shown signs of life against Chicago already this series.

Kansas City counters with right-hander Randy Dobnak, who has quietly been excellent in a small sample, sitting at 2-0 with a sparkling 1.16 ERA. Dobnak’s sinker-heavy approach has generated quick outs and kept him out of trouble, and if he can carry that form into Sunday, the Royals have a real chance to make this closer than the moneyline suggests. The concern for Kansas City is a beat-up pitching staff overall — Cole Ragans (elbow), Carlos Estevez (shoulder) and Luinder Avila (elbow) are all out, thinning a group that was already stretched before those losses.

Offensively, shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. remains the engine for Kansas City and the one Royal capable of changing a game by himself, but he’s needed more help than he’s gotten most nights. Vinnie Pasquantino’s continued absence with a wrist injury and Maikel Garcia’s hand issue have sapped the middle of Kansas City’s order, forcing more responsibility onto younger pieces like Jac Caglianone and center fielder Kyle Isbel. Isbel has provided steady value defensively in center and has flashed pop against left-handed pitching, which could matter against Boyd on Sunday.

Chicago’s lineup, by contrast, has been rolling. The Cubs have won five of their last seven and seven of their last ten, an offense that has produced 601 runs on the season, tops in the division, and one that took three of four from the Dodgers before this series in Kansas City. That kind of depth is the difference between these two clubs right now — the Cubs can survive an off night from any one hitter, while the Royals need nearly everything to break right to keep pace.

Prediction and Best Bet

Kansas City’s Saturday win proves this Royals club isn’t rolling over, and Dobnak’s ERA says he’s capable of keeping Sunday’s game low-scoring. But Chicago’s lineup depth, its 7-3 stretch over the last ten games, and Boyd’s track record as a favorite make the Cubs the play to close out the series, even on the road at Kauffman Stadium.

Other Game Picks

  • Prediction: Chicago Cubs 6, Kansas City Royals 3
  • Best Bet: Cubs on the moneyline

With Boyd pitching like one of the more consistent arms in the league and the Royals still without several key bullpen pieces, Chicago’s moneyline price offers better value than laying the extra run and a half on the spread.
