Cardinals vs. Cubs Prediction: Can St. Louis Salvage the Series Finale at Wrigley?

The St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs close out their weekend set on Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field, with first pitch set for 3:15 p.m. ET on ABC. The Cubs enter having split the first two games of the series, salvaging Saturday’s 8-4 win after dropping the opener 3-0 on Friday. St. Louis (62-61) sits third in the NL Central, 13.5 games back of the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers, while Chicago (72-52) is locked into second place and clinging to hope of closing the gap before October. This is the final head-to-head meeting of the regular season between these two rivals, and while St. Louis has nothing left to play for in the division race, spoiling the Cubs’ momentum in front of the Wrigley faithful would be a nice consolation prize.

The season series has been shockingly even given the gap in the standings — the Cardinals have actually won more of these head-to-head meetings than they’ve lost, a reminder that division rivalries rarely play out the way the standings suggest.

What the Odds Say About Chicago’s Edge

Oddsmakers have installed the Cubs as solid home favorites, with Chicago sitting around -150 on the moneyline and St. Louis getting +140 as the road underdog. The run line has the Cubs at -1.5 and the Cardinals at +1.5, with the total set at 9 runs. That number reflects both offenses trending hot lately — Chicago is hitting .255 with a .790 OPS as a team in August, while the Cardinals have shown flashes of their own power, including a 17-1 blowout of the Cubs back in July. Vegas clearly favors Chicago’s superior roster and home-field advantage, but the Cardinals covering the run line has been a live bet in this series all year.

Crow-Armstrong and the Cubs’ Offense Carry the Load

Pete Crow-Armstrong has been the engine of the Cubs’ lineup all season, hitting .279 with 27 home runs, 73 RBI and 30 stolen bases while posting a .912 OPS. He’s been especially dangerous in August, and his blend of power and speed at the top of the order creates matchup problems St. Louis hasn’t solved well this year. Seiya Suzuki (.272, 21 homers) and Ian Happ (20 homers despite a modest .214 average) give the Cubs multiple sources of thump, while Dansby Swanson and Alex Bregman round out a lineup that’s produced 637 runs this season, the second-most in the National League.

Chicago’s pitching staff has been battered by injuries, though. Edward Cabrera is dealing with a hamstring issue, and the rotation has already lost Justin Steele and Cade Horton to elbow injuries for the year, along with a string of bullpen arms including Daniel Palencia, Ben Brown, Phil Maton and Shelby Miller. That depletion has forced manager to lean heavily on a patchwork pitching mix, which helps explain why the total keeps climbing in this series.

On the other side, the Cardinals have been the better team over the last 10 games, going 6-4 to the Cubs’ 8-2, though Chicago has won seven of its last 10 dating back further. St. Louis is built around a lineup that’s produced 529 runs this season, roughly 100 fewer than Chicago, but the Cardinals have shown they can hang in track meets against this rotation, as evidenced by that 17-1 explosion in early July. Hunter Dobbins gets the ball for St. Louis on Sunday, looking to bounce back after a rough recent stretch, while the Cubs turn to Cabrera as he works through the hamstring concern.

Defensively, Michael Busch has quietly been one of the Cubs’ most consistent everyday players this year, providing steady production at first base while Nico Hoerner anchors the infield with his usual blend of contact skills and elite glove work at second base.

Other Game Picks

Prediction and Best Bet

Given the state of Chicago’s pitching staff and St. Louis’s recent form, this profiles as a game where the Cardinals can keep it competitive even as road underdogs. The Cubs’ offense should be able to generate enough traffic against a Cardinals staff that’s been homer-prone lately, but St. Louis’s lineup has proven all season it can match Chicago blow for blow when the Cubs’ rotation is stretched thin.

  • Prediction: Cubs 6, Cardinals 5
  • Best Bet: Cardinals +1.5 on the run line

With Chicago’s rotation still absorbing multiple long-term injuries and this season series having been a coin flip from wire to wire, taking the extra run and a half with St. Louis offers the better value than laying the moneyline price on a Cubs team that hasn’t been able to shake this matchup all year.
