2026 American League West Preview: Live Odds and Our Top Prediction

The AL West has spent most of the last decade living in the Astros’ world. Houston ran the division by building a machine that churned out top prospects and paired them with high-end acquisitions, leading to seven AL West titles in eight years and two World Series trophies.

Meanwhile, the rest of the West cycled through short-lived peaks amid rebuilds in search of a lasting winning formula. In 2025, it could be argued that the Seattle Mariners shifted the balance of power, nabbing their first West championship since the 116-win team in 2001.

It was the Mariners who finished the season representing the division in the ALCS, as Houston had done every year from 2017 to 2023, and now are the favorites to own the West in 2026.

2026 Outlook & Key Transactions

Mariners

Seattle’s recent profile has been to prioritize elite pitching but under-invest in effective bats. This narrative was blown apart by the Mariners mid-summer acquisitions of Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez in 2025, which propelled them to within one game of a first World Series appearance.

Led by AL MVP runner-up Cal Raleigh with All-Stars Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena, the M’s ranked third in home runs and steals and ninth in walks. Despite injuries to Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, and Bryce Miller in 2025, the rotation was sustained by Bryan Woo’s All-Star year while Andres Muñoz slammed the door shut with 38 saves. Seattle’s 2026 lineup, while similar, could be missing the bat of Suarez, who still remains unsigned at this time.

Astros

Houston’s 2025 season featured breakout seasons from key, rising players, but was still a failure at the organizational level. Jeremy Peña, the man who took over shortstop from Carlos Correa in 2022, posted a career-high 5.6 WAR in just 125 games, earning him All-Star status but leaving the question of how good his numbers might have been over 150+ games open.

His improvement buoyed the team through Yordan Alvarez’s 114-game absence and Jose Altuve’s down year, but left them short of a division title and on the outside of the playoff picture for the first time since 2016. Similarly, on the mound, Hunter Brown vaulted himself into ace status with a 6.1 WAR season that earned a third-place Cy Young finish and his first All-Star recognition.

The one-two punch of Brown and Framber Valdez is another uncertainty in 2026, with Valdez still looking for a contract. The durable lefty has hurled the second-most innings in MLB since 2022, and Spotrac estimates his next contract will fall somewhere in the $30M-per-year range over 5-7 seasons.

Rangers

The team with the most outcome variability in the AL West is the Texas Rangers. Less than three years removed from their 2023 World Series title, they’ve struggled to get all of their key players healthy and performing together since. The Rangers parted ways with manager Bruce Bochy after the season, replacing him with former Marlins skipper Skip Schumacher, who was a senior advisor in the front office for 2025.

On the field, the team lost a piece of its nucleus in Marcus Semien, whom they traded to the Mets for outfielder Brandon Nimmo. Corey Seager and Wyatt Langford remain poised to lead the order, along with Nimmo, Joc Pederson, Jake Burger, and, they hope, Evan Carter.

On the mound, Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi figure to be the staff’s workhorses. Just days ago, the Rangers also acquired Mackenzie Gore from the Nationals, adding a left-hander with elite stuff to their rotation.

A’s

The Athletics took important steps toward a brighter future in 2025. While playing in the hitter-friendly confines of their minor league park in Sacramento, the A’s ranked fifth in home-run rate and sixth in ISO, thanks in large part to AL ROY Nick Kurtz blasting 36 long balls in just 115 games.

Kurtz was one of four Athletics to hit 25+ homers, and that figures to be a large part of their lineup profile again in 2026.nJacob Wilson was another revelation, finishing runner-up to Kurtz in ROY voting after ranking third in the AL in batting average.

Their rotation, led by Luis Severino and Jeffrey Springs, leaves room for improvement. Up-and-coming prospects Jacob Lopez and Luis Morales are expected to compete for regular starts, which could either be cause for hope or concern.

Angels

Finally, we arrive at the Angels. The most notable change to their roster in 2026 is a pair of reclamation projects in the rotation: Grayson Rodriguez and Alek Manoah. Neither player has thrown a live pitch since mid-2024, but they are both young and have flashed at times in their short careers.

Rodriguez was acquired by trading outfielder Taylor Ward to Baltimore, where the Angels avoided paying Ward following a career season at the plate and now have Grayson Rodriguez under team control for several years.

Even in the unlikely event that both Rodriguez and Manoah are reborn in LA, this is not a roster built to compete in 2026 or the foreseeable future; an unfortunate truth given we’re witnessing the final years of Mike Trout’s Hall of Fame career.

2026 AL West Best Bet (DraftKings)

Texas Rangers – Division Winner: +350

The Mariners boast one of the top pitching staffs backed up by an experienced, lethal bullpen, all of which underlies one of the more effective batting orders in baseball. They’re the clear favorite in the division, but the team most likely to challenge them, in our opinion, is the Texas Rangers.

Texas has the top-end pitching and lineup potential to compete with most teams in the American League; they just need to stay healthy. Their current price reflects sportsbooks’ lack of belief in that scenario.

However, we have more faith in their roster construction than Houston’s, and Seattle has injury concerns of its own to contend with. If the Rangers achieve their potential in 2026, the AL West race is much closer than it appears, and this number is too appealing to stay away from.
