Tuesday night’s MLB slate is loaded with playoff-race intensity, and that usually means one thing for prop bettors: value hiding in plain sight. Red Sox-Guardians, Astros-Mariners, and a Dodgers-Padres tilt with real October stakes all kick off within a few hours of each other on September 22, and we sifted through the board to find the three plays that stood out above everything else — regardless of stat category.
This is a best-of-the-board card. One longshot power swing, one steady contact bet, and one strikeout number that the market might be sleeping on. Here’s where the value is hiding tonight.
Willson Contreras to Go Deep Against Cleveland
Let’s start with the fun one. Willson Contreras is sitting on a home run prop priced up around +517 for Boston’s 10:45 p.m. ET matchup with the Guardians at Fenway Park, and the numbers make a real case for chasing that number even at a longshot price. Contreras leads the Red Sox in both hits (123) and on-base percentage (.387) this season, and he’s been scorching the ball lately — batting .375 over his last five games with a home run, two walks and two RBIs mixed in.
Boston is favored on the moneyline at home, and the total for this one has settled around 6.5-7 runs, which tells you both lineups expect some offense at Fenway. Contreras has 26 home runs on the year, and a hitter with his kind of recent contact quality doesn’t need much more than a mistake pitch to turn a plus-500 price into a winner. This isn’t a bet you back for volume — it’s a bet you back because the price dramatically overstates how unlikely it actually is on a given night.
Josh Naylor Keeps It Simple Against Houston
If Contreras is the swing-for-the-fences look, Josh Naylor is the steady, low-variance anchor of this card. Naylor is priced at -175 to record at least one hit against the Astros in Seattle’s 9:40 p.m. ET series matchup, and everything about his season profile supports laying the price. He’s batting .268 with 154 hits, 10 home runs and 54 RBIs on the year, and he’s been a metronome of contact — hitting safely in a strong majority of his recent starts, including a 3-for-4 kind of week that’s become the norm rather than the exception.
Model projections have him right around 1.3 hits for this game, well clear of the 0.5 line needed to cash. Naylor doesn’t strike out much for a power bat — his K-rate sits in the low double digits — which keeps his floor high even on nights he’s not squaring the ball up perfectly. Against a Houston pitching staff that’s grinding through the stretch run, betting on Naylor to simply do what he does every night is about as close to a coin-flip-in-your-favor as this slate offers, minus the coin flip.
Michael King’s Strikeout Number Is the Sharpest Play on the Board
Buried in a marquee Dodgers-Padres game with playoff seeding on the line is the best value play of the night: Michael King’s strikeout total. King enters his start at Dodger Stadium at 12-9 with a 3.03 ERA and 154 strikeouts across 181 innings this season — a strong season by any measure, and one that’s quietly made him a top-10 ERA arm in the National League.
The market has priced King’s strikeout prop right around the 4.5 mark, and recent length has been the swing factor — King’s been stretched deeper into games as San Diego’s rotation leans on him in a tight NL playoff picture. Against a deep, disciplined Dodgers lineup that racks up at-bats and forces pitch counts, there’s a path to King working through the order a third time and pushing well past that number, especially if San Diego’s offense gives him a lead to protect. Given the stakes of this specific game for both clubs, expect King to be given every chance to go deep and rack up strikeouts rather than get an early hook.
Lock These In
Three very different bets, three very different reasons to like them — but each one solves for the same thing: real value against a real number. Check your book’s live odds before locking anything in, since lines move fast once first pitch approaches, especially for a slate this stacked with meaningful late-September baseball. If you want to shop the full market before betting, our MLB odds hub has you covered.
- Willson Contreras OVER 0.5 Home Runs (+517)
- Josh Naylor OVER 0.5 Hits (-175)
- Michael King OVER 4.5 Strikeouts (check your book)
Chase the power number for fun, lean on Naylor for stability, and don’t overlook King — on a night this full of star power, the sharpest money might be on the arm nobody’s talking about.
