3 Best MLB Props to Back on September 5: Cavalli, Rasmussen, and Torkelson

The three sharpest MLB props on today’s board, mixing strikeout plays and a matchup-history hits pick you don’t want to miss.

Saturday’s MLB slate is loaded, but three props stand out above everything else on the board today, and they don’t all come from the same corner of the game. That’s the fun part. We’ve got a fireballing Nationals righty a few months removed from Tommy John rehab now humming along nicely against a stacked Dodgers lineup, a Rays workhorse who’s been must-watch on the mound all season, and a Tigers slugger who has treated one specific Guardians pitcher like batting practice for three straight years.

None of these picks are subtle. They’re the three sharpest angles we could find anywhere on today’s card, mixing a strikeout prop, another strikeout prop, and a pure matchup-history hits play. Here’s why all three deserve a spot on your slip.

Cade Cavalli Over 5.5 Strikeouts vs. Dodgers

Cavalli gets a tough draw on paper — the Dodgers lineup isn’t easy for anybody — but the version of Cavalli taking the mound right now isn’t the same pitcher who was fighting to find his footing earlier this year. Over his last three starts he’s punched out 8, 7, and 11 batters, a stretch that includes one of the best strikeout showings by any Nationals starter this season. For the year, he’s sitting on 177 strikeouts in 152.2 innings, a 10.45 K/9 that ranks among the best marks in all of baseball, paired with a 3.12 ERA that shows this isn’t empty swing-and-miss stuff — he’s actually getting outs with it.

The current line has him at 5.5 strikeouts, and given he’s cleared that number in each of his last three outings by a comfortable margin, this is a number his stuff should handle even against a lineup with real thump in it. The Dodgers chase and swing through spin more than people realize, and Cavalli’s shape plays right into that.

Drew Rasmussen Strikeouts vs. Rangers

Rasmussen has quietly been one of the more consistent strikeout arms in the American League all year, and Saturday’s matchup with Texas sets up well for him to keep that going. He’s racked up 149 strikeouts in 146.1 innings this season — a 9.2 K/9 — while posting a sparkling 2.95 ERA and a tidy 0.93 WHIP that ranks near the top of all qualified starters. His 14-5 record isn’t just run support carrying him either; when Rasmussen is on, hitters simply aren’t squaring him up.

The Rangers lineup has had its share of strikeout-prone stretches this season, and Rasmussen’s ability to miss bats with both his fastball and slider gives him a real path to clearing his current strikeout number. When a pitcher is running a WHIP under 1.00 and a strikeout rate over 9 per nine, betting the over on his strikeout total is often the play that respects what the season-long sample is actually telling you, and Saturday lines up as another chance for him to hit it.

Spencer Torkelson Over 0.5 Hits vs. Logan Allen

This is the kind of matchup-history play that sharp bettors dream about. Torkelson has faced Logan Allen nine times in his career and been an absolute menace every single time — a .625 average and a 2.292 OPS against him, numbers that don’t happen by accident. Break it down year by year and the trend holds up across three separate seasons: a 1.666 OPS against Allen in one season, 3.000 in another, 2.500 in the most recent. That’s not a one-game fluke, that’s a hitter who has legitimately figured out a specific pitcher and kept the answer key.

Torkelson also carries a strong .764 OPS against left-handed pitching overall this year, so the matchup-specific dominance is backed up by a real platoon split in his favor, not just noise from a tiny sample against one guy. Betting Torkelson to record at least one hit against Allen has been close to a lock over the years, and there’s no reason to think Saturday breaks that pattern. Today’s Edge

Three completely different angles, three of the sharpest reads on the board. When you can find a strikeout arm on a heater, a workhorse who racks up whiffs by the bushel, and a hitter with an outright historical stranglehold on his opposing pitcher, all in the same slate, that’s the kind of day worth building a card around.

  • Cade Cavalli OVER 5.5 Strikeouts (+117)
  • Drew Rasmussen OVER 5.5 Strikeouts (-104)
  • Spencer Torkelson OVER 0.5 Hits (-127)

Check your book for the latest numbers before you fire, but all three of these have legitimate season-long or matchup-specific data behind them — exactly the kind of props worth targeting on a Saturday slate this deep.
