Tuesday’s MLB slate is loaded, but three props stand out above the noise — not because they fit a neat theme, but because each one has real numbers behind it. We’re not married to strikeouts or home runs or hits today. We’re just chasing the best edges on the board, wherever they show up.
From a Cy Young favorite showing cracks in his command to a veteran slugger seeing a juicy matchup, to a Cubs outfielder who’s suddenly must-roster hot, these three bets deserve a look before first pitch.
Paul Skenes Is Human Again — Fade the Strikeout Prop
Paul Skenes owns a 10.9 K/9 for the season and a 3.79 ERA that still reads like a front-of-rotation arm, but the swagger of his last three starts tells a different story. Against San Diego on August 25, he needed 87 pitches to get through six innings and struck out just four. Five days later against Detroit, he was pulled after only 4.1 innings, whiffing five while walking four. Then against Miami, he managed just four punchouts across five frames.
That’s an average of roughly 4.3 strikeouts over his last three outings — nowhere near the 6.5 line the books are still hanging on him for Tuesday’s matchup with San Francisco. Command has been the issue, not velocity; Skenes is still touching 100-plus, but he’s missing fewer bats and working deeper counts, which is dragging down his innings and, by extension, his strikeout ceiling. The Giants also aren’t an easy strikeout matchup — a lineup that makes contact and works counts, similar to the look Detroit and Miami gave him in his last two starts.
At odds around -135, the Under 6.5 Ks isn’t asking for anything Skenes hasn’t already shown three times running. This is a fade built on recent form, not a hunch.
Eugenio Suarez Feasts on the Long Ball
Eugenio Suarez has 20 home runs this season, and while the batting average sits at a modest .208, that number has never told the real story with him — this is a hitter built for one swing, not a high floor. He’s still with Cincinnati as the Reds host San Diego, and the power profile plays into a matchup where the Padres’ pitching staff has been vulnerable to the long ball in recent weeks.
The Over 0.5 Home Runs prop is sitting around +320 to +389 depending on the book — an implied probability in the mid-teens that undersells how often Suarez has gone deep against right-handed pitching this year. He’s a classic all-or-nothing bat: strikeouts pile up, but so do souvenirs. Against a Padres staff that’s given up its share of homers in this series already, paying plus-money for one Suarez swing to leave the yard is a smart way to attack tonight’s board.
This isn’t a bet on Suarez being a good all-around hitter right now — it’s a bet on his one elite tool showing up in a good spot.
Tyrone Taylor Is Riding a Hot Streak in Chicago
Tyrone Taylor’s move to the Cubs after being dealt from the Mets has paid off immediately, and Monday was the exclamation point — a 4-for-6 day with a home run and three RBI in a blowout win over Milwaukee. He’s projected for right around one hit per game on the season, and Tuesday’s matchup against a Brewers pitching staff gives him another shot to keep the barrel hot.
Books have priced this appropriately, with the Over 0.5 Hits sitting in the -150 to -185 range depending on the sportsbook, and Taylor’s per-game hit rate this season backs the number. Facing a Brewers staff that’s had trouble putting away contact hitters in the middle of the order, a single is a very low bar for someone who just posted four hits the day before. Betting favorites on player props isn’t glamorous, but this is the kind of short-priced play that wins far more often than the odds suggest when the underlying form is this strong.
Today’s Edge
Mixing angles is the whole point of a best-of-the-board article — sometimes the sharpest read on a slate is a strikeout fade, sometimes it’s a power swing at plus-money, and sometimes it’s just betting a hot bat to keep doing what it’s doing. All three plays here are grounded in what’s actually happened over the last several days, not blind faith in a name.
- Paul Skenes UNDER 6.5 Strikeouts (-135)
- Eugenio Suarez OVER 0.5 Home Runs (+320 to +389)
- Tyrone Taylor OVER 0.5 Hits (-150 to -185)
