Diamondbacks vs. Orioles Prediction: Trevor Rogers and Baltimore Have the Edge at Camden Yards

Two teams trying to find their footing in the early weeks of the season square off Monday evening at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, as the Arizona Diamondbacks (9-7) travel to Baltimore to open a three-game series against the Orioles (8-7). Both clubs have shown flashes of the quality that made them dangerous in recent years, and neither has fully pulled away or fully collapsed. The result is a matchup between a pair of streaky, evenly matched clubs that should make for compelling baseball on a warm April evening in Baltimore, with temperatures near 80 degrees and essentially no rain in the forecast.

Arizona has won four of its last five games coming into this series, bouncing back impressively after a rough stretch by rattling off wins against the Mets and the Phillies. Corbin Carroll is back to being one of the most dangerous offensive players in the National League, hitting .327 with a .653 slugging percentage and a .414 on-base percentage. The Diamondbacks at 9-7 sit third in the NL West, two and a half games behind the red-hot Dodgers. Baltimore, meanwhile, has also won four of its last five and is in a three-way tie for first place in the AL East at 8-7, tied with Tampa Bay and New York. The Orioles are not as polished as they were during their 2023 and 2024 runs, but they are competitive and have one of the most electric young hitters in baseball in Gunnar Henderson.

Trevor Rogers Silences the Desert — Baltimore’s Left-Hander is the Story Here

The pitching matchup favors the Orioles clearly tonight. Baltimore sends out Trevor Rogers, who has been quietly one of the best starters in the American League through the first three weeks of the season. Rogers is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA and a 1.265 WHIP over 19 innings of work. He has allowed just 15 hits, given up only 4 earned runs, and struck out 14 while walking 5. For a left-hander going against a Diamondbacks lineup that has been heavy on right-handed hitters, Rogers is in a favorable position.

Arizona counters with Ryne Nelson, who opened the season solidly but has been less impressive in recent starts. Nelson is 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA, a 1.067 WHIP, and has allowed 10 hits with 12 strikeouts and 6 walks through 15 innings. His 4 home runs allowed in those 15 innings are concerning, especially going up against a Baltimore lineup led by Gunnar Henderson, who already has 6 home runs and 12 RBIs through 15 games. The Orioles open at -130 on the moneyline (Arizona at +110), with the run line sitting at Baltimore -1.5 at -131 and Arizona +1.5 at -187. The total is 8.5.

That -187 price on the Diamondbacks covering the run line despite being the underdog tells you how reluctant the market is to lay the extra run and a half with Baltimore, given Nelson’s vulnerability to the long ball. The over at 8.5 also carries appeal, with both teams hitting well and the Diamondbacks’ lineup featuring a .327-hitting Corbin Carroll and a lineup full of players capable of damaging mistakes.

Henderson and Carroll — The Headliners in a Star-Studded Early Midsummer Classic Preview

Gunnar Henderson has been the best player on the Baltimore roster through 15 games, and it is not particularly close. His 6 home runs and .581 slugging percentage represent the kind of all-around production that made him an MVP contender last season. Taylor Ward has also been red-hot for the Orioles, batting .356 with a .443 on-base percentage. Pete Alonso, acquired in the offseason to shore up first base, is finding his footing at .190, but he has the power to change a game with one swing at any moment.

The Diamondbacks counter with Corbin Carroll as their table-setter and tone-setter. Carroll at .327 with a .653 slugging percentage looks like the Carroll of his MVP-caliber 2023 campaign, and having him at the top of the lineup against a left-hander creates interesting decisions for Rogers. Ildemaro Vargas is hitting .394 and has been one of the surprise contributors to Arizona’s lineup. Nolan Arenado, sitting at .180 through 15 games, has been the one major concern — the veteran third baseman has not found his swing yet, and his .192 on-base percentage is a liability near the middle of the lineup.

Baltimore has key injury concerns. Adley Rutschman (out), Jackson Holliday (10-day IL), and Corbin Burnes (out with elbow) represent significant absences, but the Orioles have the organizational depth to absorb those losses, and Rogers has been good enough to handle his own business without Burnes at the top of the rotation. Arizona is also dealing with injuries to Merrill Kelly (15-day IL), Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (10-day IL), and Gabriel Moreno (out until April 21).

Prediction and Best Bet

Trevor Rogers against a road Diamondbacks lineup is the best pitching matchup on the board tonight, and the Orioles at home with their ace going should be the play. Baltimore’s lineup is dangerous enough to provide Rogers with run support, and Nelson’s susceptibility to home runs is a real concern with Henderson and Ward in that lineup.

  • Prediction: Orioles 5, Diamondbacks 3
  • Best Bet: Baltimore Orioles moneyline (-130)

The Orioles at -130 represent solid value in a game where they have both the pitching advantage and a legitimate home-field edge at Camden Yards. Rogers has been exceptional, the lineup is hitting well despite the injuries, and Nelson’s home-run issues are a red flag when the Orioles can drive the ball out of the park. This line should honestly be steeper given how well Rogers has pitched, making Baltimore a sharp play at the current number.
