Best Bet for Friday, June 14th: Will Smith (+575)

It might seem like a tall task picking someone going up against Cole Ragans, who’s been one of the league’s best starters in 2024. While Ragans has put up a very strong campaign, I don’t think he’s untouchable and hasn’t faced a lineup of the Dodger’s caliber since he got touched up by the Orioles. Ragan’s fastball/changeup combination has been lethal in 2024 but has struggled to fully implement a third pitch at a high level. He’s impressed with his 30.2% K-Rate, supported by a strong 22.5 K-BB.

Despite this, Will Smith is one of the top hitters in the league against left-handed pitching, with a 238 wRC+ in 2024. He’s supporting a .400/.486/.746 split with four home runs in 70 at bats so far this season. It simply doesn’t get much better than that for everyday players. Smith is a good fastball hitter and has also hit breaking pitches well in 2024, which is where Ragans has struggled.

Smith is also in the top 20th percentile in terms of K-Rate and that number only goes higher against lefties. Hitting in the four slot behind Betts, Ohtani, and Freddie Freeman might be one of the best opportunities of any batter to hit a grand slam on any given day.

BetMGM is also showing a market high price of +575, while the majority of books are around +500. That’s not a huge edge in terms of expected value, but I do like getting the best price available on a guy who should probably be priced more in the +400 range.
