Polymarket Review

By Adam Hutchinson · Updated August 28, 2026 · Fact-checked by Bill Christy

Polymarket has the broadest and most interesting market selection of the prediction platforms we’ve reviewed, with strong liquidity across sports, politics, economics, crypto and breaking news. For sports bettors, the exchange-style pricing and ability to trade out early are compelling, but Polymarket’s biggest advantage is that there is almost always something new to trade beyond the traditional sportsbook calendar.

Polymarket is the biggest name in prediction markets and one of the easiest platforms to understand once you get past the terminology. Instead of betting against a sportsbook, users buy and sell contracts tied to the outcome of future events, with market prices changing in real time as traders react to new information.

Sports are a major part of the platform, but they are only one piece of the Polymarket experience. You can also find active markets covering politics, economics, cryptocurrency, technology, entertainment, weather and breaking news, giving Polymarket a much broader selection than sports-first competitors such as Novig and ProphetX.

Eligible new U.S. users can also use our current Polymarket promo code EWB, deposit at least $10 and receive $20 in promotional trading credit.

What Is Polymarket?

Polymarket is an online prediction market where participants trade contracts tied to future outcomes.

A typical market asks a straightforward question such as whether a team will win a game, whether a candidate will win an election or whether a particular economic event will occur. Contracts generally trade between $0.01 and $0.99, with the price reflecting the market’s current estimate of the probability that the outcome will occur.

If a YES contract is trading at $0.65, for example, the market is essentially assigning that outcome a probability of around 65%.

A correct contract settles at $1 when the market resolves, while an incorrect contract becomes worth $0.

Unlike a sportsbook, Polymarket does not need to decide what odds every customer receives. Buyers and sellers interact through an order book, and prices are created by supply and demand from the participants themselves.

Polymarket US vs. Polymarket.com

For U.S. users, it is important to understand that Polymarket US and Polymarket.com are separate products.

Polymarket.com is the company’s international prediction market. U.S. residents instead use the regulated Polymarket US platform, which operates under a U.S. derivatives-market structure.

The accounts are not interchangeable. A Polymarket.com account does not automatically function as a Polymarket US account, and U.S. residents cannot simply use the international website as an alternative.

Polymarket US operates through QCX LLC, which does business as Polymarket US and is registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as a Designated Contract Market.

How Polymarket Works

Every Polymarket contract represents an outcome that will eventually resolve according to rules published with the market.

For a basic YES/NO contract:

  • A YES share pays $1 if the listed event occurs.
  • A NO share pays $1 if the listed event does not occur.
  • The losing side settles at $0.

You do not necessarily have to hold a position until the event ends. Polymarket allows users to buy and sell shares while the market is still active, which means the value of your position can change as new information becomes available.

This is one of the biggest differences between prediction trading and making a conventional sportsbook wager. Your position can function more like a tradable asset than a ticket you simply wait to settle.

How Polymarket Prices Work

Polymarket prices are created through its order book rather than being set entirely by the platform.

Users submit orders showing how much they are willing to pay for a particular outcome. When compatible buyers and sellers are available, those orders can be matched.

The displayed probability generally reflects the pricing available in the order book. If a contract is shown at 72 cents, the market is roughly pricing the outcome at a 72% chance.

That number is not Polymarket making a prediction. It represents the collective price created by participants buying and selling the contract.

What Can You Trade on Polymarket?

Market selection is arguably Polymarket’s biggest advantage over the rest of the prediction market industry.

Major categories include:

  • Sports
  • Politics and elections
  • Economics
  • Financial markets
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Technology
  • Culture and entertainment
  • Weather
  • Geopolitical events
  • Breaking news and current events

Polymarket has built much of its reputation around creating markets for events people are already debating online. When a major political development, economic release or breaking-news story becomes important, there is often a corresponding Polymarket price providing a real-time snapshot of what traders think will happen.

For users who want something to trade every day rather than only when major sporting events are taking place, that breadth is difficult to match.

Polymarket Sports Markets

Sports have become an increasingly important part of Polymarket’s U.S. product.

Depending on the season and event, available sports can include:

  • Professional football
  • College football
  • Professional basketball
  • College basketball
  • Professional baseball
  • Professional hockey
  • Soccer
  • Golf
  • Tennis
  • MMA and combat sports

Polymarket sports contracts can cover familiar questions such as game winners, spreads and totals as well as championship futures, awards and season-long outcomes.

That means sportsbook users do not have to completely change how they think about a game. The biggest difference is the way the position is priced and traded.

Polymarket Football Markets

Football is one of the most useful categories for U.S. Polymarket traders, particularly once the college and professional seasons begin.

Available football markets can include:

  • Game winners
  • Point spreads
  • Game totals
  • Championship futures
  • Conference and division outcomes
  • Playoff qualification
  • Season awards
  • Season win totals

The advantage over a traditional sportsbook is that these contracts remain tradable while the market is open. If the probability changes after you open a position, you may be able to sell before final resolution rather than waiting until the season or game ends.

Polymarket Combos

Polymarket also offers Combos, its version of a multi-leg sports position.

Combos currently allow users to combine supported sports outcomes such as moneylines, spreads and totals into a single contract. Every selected leg needs to resolve correctly for the Combo to win.

One notable difference from a conventional sportsbook parlay is that eligible Combo positions can potentially be sold before final resolution.

That exit is not guaranteed. A willing buyer must be available, and low liquidity or rapid price movement can prevent a trade from executing at the price you want.

Can You Set Your Own Price on Polymarket?

Yes. Polymarket supports limit orders, allowing users to specify the price at which they are willing to buy or sell a contract.

For example, if a YES contract is currently available at $0.74 but you only want to pay $0.70, you can submit a limit order at $0.70 and wait.

Your order executes only if another participant is willing to trade at that price.

Limit orders can also be partially filled. If you want 100 contracts but only 30 are available at your requested price, part of the order may execute while the remainder stays open.

This feature is particularly useful to experienced bettors who already understand the importance of consistently getting the best available number.

Polymarket Liquidity

Liquidity is one of the most important considerations when evaluating any prediction exchange.

A highly liquid market usually has more buyers and sellers, tighter differences between bid and ask prices and more capacity to execute larger trades without dramatically moving the price.

Polymarket’s overall scale is a major advantage here. High-profile political events, major sports contests and widely followed news markets can attract significant trading activity.

That does not mean every market is equally liquid. An obscure contract can still have limited depth, and a large order may move through multiple price levels before it is completely filled.

Before making a larger trade, we recommend looking beyond the headline probability and checking how much liquidity is actually available in the order book.

Does Polymarket Have Trading Limits?

Polymarket’s order-book model does not impose a simple universal maximum trade size.

In practical terms, however, available liquidity creates its own limit. You can only execute a large position at a specific price if enough traders are willing to take the opposite side.

A large market order can therefore experience slippage, meaning portions of the trade execute at progressively less favorable prices.

This makes limit orders particularly useful for larger positions.

Can You Cash Out on Polymarket?

Yes. You can sell an eligible Polymarket position before the underlying market resolves.

You can either sell into an existing bid for an immediate exit or submit a limit order specifying the price you are willing to accept.

This is different from a sportsbook cash-out feature. A sportsbook determines whether it wants to offer a cash out and calculates the amount. Polymarket instead lets you sell the contract to another market participant at the available market price.

If there is no willing buyer, however, you may not be able to exit immediately.

Polymarket Fees

Polymarket uses a maker-and-taker fee model.

Maker orders currently carry no trading fee. A maker is someone who places an order that rests in the order book and provides liquidity for another trader to later accept.

Takers can pay a fee depending on the category of market. A taker is the trader who immediately accepts liquidity that is already available in the order book.

Current category rates include:

  • Sports: 5% taker fee rate
  • Politics: 4% taker fee rate
  • Finance: 4% taker fee rate
  • Crypto: 7% taker fee rate
  • Economics: 5% taker fee rate
  • Culture: 5% taker fee rate
  • Weather: 5% taker fee rate
  • Technology: 4% taker fee rate
  • Geopolitical markets: No trading fee

Those percentages are not simply charged against the total dollar amount of the trade. Polymarket uses a formula that incorporates both the number of contracts and their price, meaning the actual effective fee is smaller than the headline category rate might initially suggest.

Fees are highest around contracts trading near a 50% probability and decrease as the price approaches either $0 or $1.

Polymarket Maker Rebates

Part of the taker fees collected by Polymarket is redistributed to traders who provide useful liquidity through qualifying maker orders.

This creates an incentive for participants to place competitive orders close to the current market price rather than simply taking existing liquidity.

For active traders, learning to use limit orders can therefore provide two benefits: potentially getting a better entry price and avoiding the taker fee associated with immediately accepting an existing order.

Polymarket App and User Experience

Polymarket has one of the most polished interfaces in the prediction market industry.

Markets are presented with a simple probability-first design that makes it easy to understand what traders currently think will happen. You can start with straightforward buying and selling without needing to study every detail of the order book.

More experienced traders can dig deeper into liquidity, open orders, pricing history and limit orders.

For U.S. customers, the Polymarket US product is separate from the international Polymarket.com platform, so make sure you are using the U.S. version rather than trying to register through the international site.

Polymarket Deposits

Polymarket US supports convenient funding options for eligible U.S. customers.

Current partner offer documentation lists methods including:

  • ACH / bank transfer
  • Debit card
  • Apple Pay
  • Supported cryptocurrency

Available methods can vary by device, account and location.

The easiest option for most users will be whichever standard payment method already appears inside the Polymarket US deposit screen.

Polymarket Withdrawals

Eligible account funds can be withdrawn after they become available under Polymarket’s normal account rules.

Processing method and timing can vary depending on how the account was funded and the withdrawal option selected.

As with any regulated financial platform, Polymarket may require identity or payment-method verification before completing certain transactions.

Is Polymarket Legal in the United States?

Polymarket US operates through a federally regulated derivatives-market structure.

QCX LLC, doing business as Polymarket US, is registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as a Designated Contract Market.

That is different from a traditional sportsbook, which typically obtains gaming licenses from individual states.

The distinction is important because prediction markets and state gaming regulators continue to disagree in some jurisdictions over how sports event contracts should be regulated. Availability can therefore change as regulatory and court decisions develop.

What States Is Polymarket Available In?

Polymarket US is currently available in most of the United States.

Under the current promotional eligibility terms, Polymarket is not available to users physically located in:

  • Arizona
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • Ohio
  • Washington

That leaves Polymarket available in 41 states plus Washington, D.C. under the current jurisdiction list.

Prediction-market availability is evolving quickly, so users should always confirm eligibility from their physical location before depositing or attempting to trade.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Use Polymarket?

Polymarket US currently requires users to be at least 18 years old and otherwise eligible to participate in their jurisdiction.

That differs from most U.S. online sportsbooks, which generally require customers to be 21 or older.

Polymarket Identity Verification

U.S. users should expect to complete identity verification before gaining full access to deposits and real-money trading.

The process can require standard information including your legal name, date of birth, address and government-issued identification.

This is part of the Know Your Customer and regulatory compliance process used by U.S. financial exchanges.

Polymarket Promo Code EWB

Eligible new customers can use our current Polymarket promo code EWB, deposit at least $10 and receive $20 in promotional trading credit.

The current offer is deposit-based, meaning you do not need to complete a first trade before the promotional credit is awarded.

The $20 bonus is trading credit rather than unrestricted cash. It must be used on eligible Polymarket positions before resulting proceeds can become part of your regular withdrawable balance.

Current promotional terms indicate that unused bonus credit expires 30 days after it is issued.

Polymarket Pros and Cons

What We Like About Polymarket

  • Massive market variety: Sports are joined by politics, economics, crypto, technology, culture and breaking-news contracts.
  • Strong liquidity: Major Polymarket events can attract substantial trading volume.
  • Excellent real-time pricing: Active markets provide a useful snapshot of how traders are pricing future outcomes.
  • Set your own price: Limit orders give users control over the price they are willing to accept.
  • Sell before resolution: Positions can generally be traded out before the final event settles when sufficient liquidity exists.
  • No maker trading fee: Users who add liquidity through resting orders can avoid taker fees.
  • Sports Combos: Multi-leg sports contracts provide a familiar option for parlay bettors.
  • Strong welcome offer: Eligible new users can deposit $10 and receive $20 in trading credit.

Where Polymarket Could Improve

  • Taker fees: Immediately accepting available sports liquidity currently carries a fee.
  • U.S. product is separate: The distinction between Polymarket US and Polymarket.com can initially be confusing.
  • Liquidity varies: Smaller or unusual markets may have wider spreads and less available depth.
  • Not available in every state: Several states are currently excluded from the U.S. product.
  • Prediction-market terminology takes some adjustment: Order books, makers, takers and contract pricing are less familiar than standard sportsbook odds.

Polymarket vs. a Traditional Sportsbook

The biggest difference between Polymarket and a traditional sportsbook is who determines the price.

A sportsbook publishes odds and decides how much action it is willing to accept. Polymarket creates an exchange where buyers and sellers establish contract prices through the order book.

That can give users greater control. You can accept the current market price, submit your own limit order or sell an existing position before settlement.

The drawback is that every trade requires sufficient liquidity. A sportsbook can choose to instantly accept a conventional bet, while a Polymarket order needs another market participant on the opposite side.

Polymarket vs. Novig

Polymarket and Novig approach prediction markets from different directions.

Novig is almost entirely sports-focused and deliberately designed to feel familiar to existing sportsbook customers. Polymarket offers sports but also has an enormous selection of politics, economic, financial, crypto and current-event markets.

For straight pregame sports trades, Novig’s current fee-free pricing can be particularly attractive. Polymarket, however, has a major advantage in overall market breadth and can offer deeper liquidity on many high-profile events.

If you only care about sports, both are worth checking for the best available price. If you want to trade events outside sports as well, Polymarket is the clear winner of the two.

Polymarket vs. ProphetX

ProphetX is another sports-first exchange, while Polymarket is built around a much broader universe of real-world outcomes.

Both give traders the ability to submit limit orders and trade directly through an order book, but ProphetX feels more like a dedicated sports exchange. Polymarket feels more like a marketplace for virtually anything that can be turned into an objectively resolvable question.

For experienced sports bettors, the best choice may simply depend on which platform has the better price and deeper liquidity for the specific event you want to trade.

Who Should Use Polymarket?

Polymarket is our favorite choice for users who want the broadest possible prediction-market experience.

It works well for sports bettors because familiar football, basketball, baseball and other sports contracts are readily available. But the platform becomes much more interesting if you also follow elections, financial markets, cryptocurrency, technology or major breaking-news events.

It is also a good fit for active traders who want to use limit orders, watch prices react to news and enter or exit positions rather than simply placing a bet and waiting for settlement.

If you want an app dedicated almost exclusively to sports, Novig or ProphetX may feel more streamlined. If you want the most things to trade, Polymarket is difficult to beat.

Our Polymarket Review: The Verdict

Polymarket remains the benchmark for prediction-market variety. No other platform we have reviewed does as good a job of turning sports, elections, financial data, technology, culture and breaking news into markets you can actually trade.

For sports bettors, its order-book model provides many of the same advantages we like about Novig and ProphetX: transparent prices, limit orders and the ability to exit positions before resolution.

The current taker-fee structure means it is still worth shopping prices across competing exchanges, especially for sports. But Polymarket’s liquidity, breadth and constant stream of new markets give it a unique advantage that goes well beyond a single fee comparison.

Eligible new U.S. customers can also get started with our Polymarket promo code EWB, deposit at least $10 and receive $20 in promotional trading credit.
