On paper, this looks like one of the more lopsided pitching matchups of the night. The Pittsburgh Pirates send out Paul Skenes — one of the best young starters in baseball — against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who will counter with Eric Lauer, a left-hander who has been one of the more hittable starters in the National League this season. And yet, the oddsmakers see this as essentially a coin flip, which tells you something interesting about how bettors and books think about team strength versus individual matchup quality.
First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. ET at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, where the Pirates are 34-32 on the season. The Dodgers roll in at 42-24 — one of the best records in baseball — making this a clash between a powerhouse franchise and a Pirates club that is dangerous when Skenes takes the mound.
The moneyline has been a moving target throughout the day. DraftKings opened with the Dodgers at -115 and the Pirates at -105, a near pick'em. Action Network has it at a dead-even -110 on both sides. FanDuel has Pittsburgh as a -112 favorite with Los Angeles at -104, effectively making the Pirates a slight home favorite. The run line has the Dodgers at -1.5 (+155 to +164) and Pittsburgh covering at -185 to -200. The over/under sits at 8 runs, with both sides at -110.
The market is essentially saying that Skenes is great, but the Dodgers are so loaded that team talent evens out the pitching gap between Skenes and Lauer. That's a reasonable take. But it also means there may be value on the Pirates, particularly if you're backing Skenes to dominate in a home start where he has historically been sharp.
Paul Skenes is in his second full season in the majors, and his 2026 numbers through the first two months were something to behold — a 2.17 ERA, 0.914 WHIP, and 10.54 strikeouts per nine innings. He is 6-5 on the season, which is more about run support than anything else. His recent form shows some regression — he allowed three or more earned runs in three of his last four outings — but his stuff remains elite and his command is among the best in baseball.
Bryan Reynolds gives Pittsburgh their most reliable middle-of-the-order presence, batting .263 with a .391 on-base percentage and six home runs. He creates traffic on the bases and hits for average against right-handers in a way that forces opposing pitchers to work carefully. Nick Gonzales, leading off at .309, has been a pleasant surprise for the Pirates and sets the table effectively at the top of the lineup.
The Dodgers, on the other hand, are one of the most offensively loaded rosters in baseball. Shohei Ohtani is slashing .302/.417/.522 with 11 home runs from the designated hitter spot. Freddie Freeman is at .280/.361/.477 with 10 home runs. Max Muncy has slugged 14 home runs and posted a .505 slugging percentage. This is a lineup that punishes pitchers who leave the ball over the plate, and Lauer has done exactly that this season — his ERA north of 5.74 reflects how consistently he has been hit hard. He is 1-5 on the year, and the Dodgers have lost both of his starts when he entered as the underdog.
The Dodgers are 42-24 for a reason. Their depth, their bullpen, and their ability to manufacture runs late in games make them dangerous even when their starter struggles. That said, Skenes tends to eat innings and keep the Dodgers' big bats at bay through the first time through the order.
The public has gone heavily to the Dodgers — roughly 74 percent of bets are on Los Angeles — which has kept their line from moving further toward Pittsburgh. Sharp money has been spotted on the Pirates side, particularly on the first-five innings run line, where Pittsburgh's advantage is most pronounced.
This game comes down to whether Skenes can navigate the Dodgers' loaded lineup for six-plus innings while the Pirates give him enough run support to work with. The Pittsburgh offense has been inconsistent, but Gonzales and Reynolds at the top of the order give them a legitimate chance to scratch against Lauer, who has been one of the more hittable pitchers in the NL this year.
The value is clearly on Pittsburgh here. When you can get the team with the superior starting pitcher at effectively even money or better, that is a spot worth taking. Skenes is the best pitcher in this game by a wide margin, Lauer is a legitimate liability at the top of the Dodgers' rotation, and the Pirates at home with near-pick'em odds is one of the better MLB values on tonight's board.
