3 NHL Goal Scorer Props to Back Tonight: Nelson, Ovechkin, Gauthier

Brock Nelson’s a model-backed value play, Alex Ovechkin gets his emotional home opener, and Cutter Gauthier is red-hot for the Ducks — our three best goal-scorer props for tonight’s NHL slate.

Wednesday nights in October are usually light on the NHL slate, but tonight’s three-game card is loaded with scoring talent. Brock Nelson and the red-hot Avalanche visit Winnipeg, Alex Ovechkin finally gets his home opener in Washington, and Cutter Gauthier tries to keep his torrid start going as the Ducks host Edmonton. Each of these guys gives you a real path to cash a goal-scorer prop tonight, and we’re not overthinking it — just taking the best stuff the board is giving us.

Two of these three picks carry legitimate model-backed edges, and the third is a future Hall of Famer getting a jolt of home-opener adrenaline. Here’s the case for betting on goals tonight.

Brock Nelson Anytime Goal Scorer (+285) — The Sharpest Number on the Board

Nelson has been locked in to start the season, and Colorado’s model-driven anytime goal scorer market has him as one of the highest-value plays anywhere on tonight’s slate. Dimers’ simulation gives Nelson a 31.4% probability to score against Winnipeg, which stacks up to a 5.4% edge over the +285 price being offered — one of the biggest mismatches between model and market in the entire NHL player props pool tonight.

Context matters here too. Nelson posted 33 goals and 65 points last season in Colorado, and he’s centering a dangerous top-six that also features Nathan MacKinnon, Martin Necas and Artturi Lehkonen. The Avalanche are heavily favored on the road at -185, and Colorado’s model-projected win probability sits north of 60%, which means expect this game to be played mostly in Winnipeg’s end. Nelson’s size and net-front presence make him a constant threat on a team that should be generating plenty of high-danger chances.

At +285 for a player that a reputable predictive model says should be priced closer to +220, this is the kind of number sharp bettors jump on before it moves.

Alex Ovechkin Anytime Goal Scorer (+195) — History Says Bet the Legend

Ovechkin’s final NHL season kicks off at home tonight against Pittsburgh, and the history here is almost too good to pass up. Ovechkin has recorded a point in 14 of his 20 career home openers, with 31 total points (20 goals, 11 assists) across those games, including a four-goal outburst back in 2017. Washington is 14-5-2 in home openers since he arrived in 2005.

Add in the emotional weight of this being his farewell campaign, a sellout crowd at Capital One Arena ready to erupt, and a Capitals team favored at home (-162, over/under 6.5), and the setup practically writes itself. Ovechkin is still the league’s active powerplay weapon of choice from his office at the left circle, and few players in history have been better at cashing in on moments with extra juice behind them.

At +195 for the greatest goal scorer the sport has ever seen, on a night built for a signature moment, this is a bet you make with your head and your heart.

Cutter Gauthier Goal Scorer / Shots on Goal — Riding the Hottest Start in Anaheim

Gauthier has been an absolute monster through two games this season, already piling up four points, nine shots on goal and a plus-1 rating — including a two-goal effort with an assist in Sunday’s overtime win over Florida, with every bit of that production coming on the power play. Fresh off a 41-goal, 28-assist breakout last season (10th-most goals in franchise history) and a new six-year contract that cements him as Anaheim’s cornerstone, Gauthier is shooting the puck relentlessly and finishing at an elite clip early on.

He’s averaging better than four shots on goal per game to open the year and is logging nearly 20 minutes a night, with over 3:40 of that on the power play — exactly the usage pattern of a player who’s about to keep piling up points. Edmonton comes to Honda Center tonight as a modest road favorite (-125), but the Oilers have had their own early-season adventures in net, and Gauthier’s combination of shot volume and power-play deployment makes both his goal-scorer and shots-on-goal props appealing tonight. Tonight’s Edge

Three different stories, three different reasons to like the goal — a model-approved value play, a future Hall of Famer embracing the moment, and a budding superstar who hasn’t cooled off yet. Here’s how we’re stacking it:

  • Brock Nelson Anytime Goal Scorer (+285)
  • Alex Ovechkin Anytime Goal Scorer (+195)
  • Cutter Gauthier Anytime Goal Scorer / Over on Shots on Goal (check your book)
