Vikings Bench J.J. McCarthy for Kyler Murray, Igniting Trade Buzz with Jets, Steelers

Kevin O’Connell named Kyler Murray the Vikings’ Week 1 starter over J.J. McCarthy on Tuesday, and the demotion has already sparked trade speculation involving the Jets and Steelers.

The Minnesota Vikings ended their quarterback competition before it ever really began. Head coach Kevin O’Connell announced Tuesday that Kyler Murray will be the team’s Week 1 starter, officially demoting J.J. McCarthy to the bench just weeks before the regular season opener against the Green Bay Packers. The decision, while widely expected, has now triggered a wave of trade speculation around the former first-round pick’s future in Minnesota.

McCarthy was the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 draft and was supposed to be the long-term answer at quarterback for a Vikings team that has cycled through four different Week 1 starters in as many seasons. Instead, his rookie year was wiped out entirely by a torn meniscus, and his first real chance to play in 2025 was marred by injury and inconsistency. He appeared in just 10 games, completing 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, a completion rate that ranked last among qualified passers. A high-ankle sprain, a concussion and a broken hand further limited his availability down the stretch.

O’Connell Explains the Call

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, O’Connell confirmed what many around the league had assumed once Minnesota signed Murray in the offseason. “Kyler will begin the process of really looking at things now as our starter,” O’Connell said, adding that the move allows the coaching staff to tailor the offense specifically to Murray’s skill set heading into the opener. The coach was careful to note that McCarthy remains part of the plan, saying “nothing changes as far as J.J. being an incredibly important member of our quarterback room and our team,” and that the third-year passer would still receive meaningful reps in practice.

Making the call now, rather than waiting until after the preseason, gives Murray the entirety of the next four-plus weeks with first-team reps as he installs the offense as QB1. It also ends any lingering ambiguity for a Vikings team that hosts the Packers to open the regular season on September 13, a game that already carries division-title weight given Minnesota’s up-and-down 9-8 finish a year ago. Trade Rumors Heat Up Around McCarthy

With Murray now firmly entrenched as the starter, speculation about McCarthy’s future has accelerated rapidly. Multiple national reports have floated the Jets and Steelers as potential landing spots, with analysts noting New York’s lack of a long-term answer behind Geno Smith as a natural fit. One widely circulated trade framework had the Jets sending a 2027 fourth-round pick to Minnesota in exchange for McCarthy, giving Aaron Glenn’s staff a developmental option without disrupting Smith’s role as the presumptive Week 1 starter.

Pittsburgh has also been mentioned as a possible destination, given the Steelers’ extended uncertainty at the position, though some analysts have questioned how McCarthy would fit behind names like Mason Rudolph. Other reports have floated Cleveland and the Los Angeles Chargers, the latter notably employing a coaching staff with existing familiarity with McCarthy. Whether Minnesota actually moves on from a quarterback they used a top-10 pick on just two years ago remains unclear, but O’Connell’s insistence that McCarthy is still a vital piece of the roster suggests the Vikings, at minimum, are not actively shopping him ahead of the season.

What Comes Next

For now, McCarthy will head into Year 3 as a backup rather than the face of the franchise many envisioned when Minnesota drafted him out of Michigan. Murray, signed to a one-year deal after his release from Arizona, gets a fresh start and full command of the huddle as the Vikings look to snap their pattern of quarterback turnover. The preseason finale and final roster cuts will offer the first real look at how the depth chart settles, but barring a trade before the September 5 deadline for teams to set their 53-man rosters, McCarthy appears ticketed for a backup role in Minnesota to open the season, with his long-term future very much still in question.
