Sunday Night Football does not get much better than this. The undefeated Kansas City Chiefs (5-0) roll into Lumen Field on October 25 to face the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks (3-3), with kickoff set for 8:20 PM ET on NBC. One side has the league’s most dangerous offense. The other has the league’s best pass defense. Throw in a revenge game, a quarterback under pressure, and a coach who has already beaten Patrick Mahomes’ ideas once, and you have the ingredients for a night worth clearing the couch for.
What the Odds Say About Chiefs vs. Seahawks
Oddsmakers have Seattle as a small home favorite. The consensus line sits at Seahawks -3 (Chiefs +3), with the moneyline around Seahawks -148 and Chiefs +124. The total is 42.5 points, which tells you the market expects the Seattle defense to have a real say in how this one plays out.
That number is a little surprising given the records. An unbeaten team is getting points on the road, which says plenty about how much respect the market has for Seattle at home and how much concern there is about a banged-up Kansas City offensive line. The Best Reasons to Watch This Game
Start with the central clash: unstoppable force, meet immovable object. Kansas City has been humming all season, winning five straight, including a 22-6 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on October 18 before a bye week. Mahomes has thrown for 1,309 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 66.5 percent of his passes, and the Chiefs are averaging 8.3 yards per pass attempt.
The twist is that the engine of this offense right now is on the ground. Running back Kenneth Walker III, the former Seahawk who was the Super Bowl MVP for Seattle, leads the NFL with 665 rushing yards and averages 6.3 yards per carry. He ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns against the Chargers. Now he gets to do it against his old team, in the stadium where he built his reputation. Revenge games do not get more cinematic than that.
Then there is the defense he is running against. Seattle owns the number one pass defense in the NFL at 141.3 yards allowed per game, has given up only eight passing touchdowns, and has piled up 16 sacks in six games. The Seahawks have also not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 35 straight games, the longest active streak in the league. Something has to give, because Walker is about to test that streak harder than anyone has.
Two Teams, Two Very Different Moods
Kansas City arrives with swagger, but not with a perfectly healthy roster. Right tackle Jaylon Moore is out with a concussion, left tackle Josh Simmons is on injured reserve, wide receiver Rashee Rice is out, and running back Brashard Smith is out. Travis Kelce is limited with an ankle issue and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed is questionable. That is a lot of missing pieces up front against a Seattle pass rush that has been getting home.
Seattle is in a stranger place. The Seahawks have lost three of their last four games, and every one of those losses came by three points or fewer: 17-14 in overtime at Denver, 32-29 to San Francisco, and 33-31 at Washington. In between they handled the Chargers 30-23 and blew out Arizona 31-7. The problem has been giveaways, with 10 turnovers across those losses. Sam Darnold has 1,033 yards and seven touchdowns, but also seven interceptions, four of them in the current two-game skid. Head coach Mike Macdonald has said there will be no change at quarterback.
The Seahawks are also thin in the backfield and at linebacker. Running back Zach Charbonnet, working back from an ACL injury, is out, as are linebackers Drake Thomas and Chazz Surratt. Safety Nick Emmanwori (hip), edge rushers DeMarcus Lawrence (knee), Uchenna Nwosu (hip) and Connor O’Toole, and backup quarterback Drew Lock (elbow) are all questionable. The good news for Seattle is that guard Anthony Bradford is back. For more on how the NFL slate sets up each week, check out our NFL betting guide.
Mahomes vs. Macdonald and a Series With History
The chess match is a storyline all its own. Macdonald was the defensive coordinator in Baltimore when the Ravens held Kansas City to 17-10 in the 2023 AFC Championship Game, and he has had a way of making Mahomes work for every yard. Mahomes is 2-0 against Seattle in his career with 497 passing yards and six touchdowns in those two games.
The Chiefs lead the all-time series 34-19, and their last meeting was a 24-10 win at Arrowhead on December 24, 2022. A win Sunday would also tighten Kansas City’s grip as a Super Bowl favorite. Prediction and Best Bet
This is a spot where Seattle’s defense and home crowd meet an offense that is temporarily short-handed up front. Kansas City’s tackle situation is a real concern against a team with 16 sacks, and Seattle’s secondary is the best in the league at taking away big plays. The Chiefs will lean on Walker, but a defense that has not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 35 straight games will not fold easily. Darnold’s turnover problem is the swing factor, but Lumen Field at night is a tough place to play, and Seattle’s defense gives him a short field often enough to stay in the game. Expect a tight, one-score game, which fits the 42.5 total.
- Prediction: Seattle Seahawks 23, Kansas City Chiefs 20
- Best Bet: Chiefs +3 on the spread
Every Seahawks loss this season has been by three points or fewer, and the Chiefs have won two of their five games by three or fewer as well, so a field goal of cushion is worth grabbing in a game with this profile. Even if Seattle gets the win, taking the three points with the road side gives you a safety net in what looks like a one-possession finish.
