Churchill Downs Doubles Stephen Foster Purse to $2 Million, Eyes Top Horses for June 27 Summer Showdown

Churchill Downs announced on Wednesday that the Grade I Stephen Foster Stakes on June 27 will carry a $2 million purse, double the $1 million offered in previous editions of the race. The track promoted the announcement under the banner “Summer Showdown” and said the increased prize money is designed to attract the best older dirt horses in training ahead of the Breeders’ Cup season. The 45th running of the 1 1/8-mile race is also a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” qualifier, with the winner earning an automatic entry to a Classic division race in the fall.

Nominations for the Stephen Foster close June 10, with owners paying $20,000 to enter and an additional $20,000 to start. The race will air on NBCSN and Peacock from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Eastern. Churchill Downs has positioned the event as the centerpiece of its June racing calendar, and the purse increase is expected to attract a more competitive field than in recent years.

Purse Distribution

The $2 million purse structure pays the winner 53 percent, or more than $1 million, after small residual payments to finishers who place sixth or below. Second place receives 22.5 percent, third earns 12.5 percent, fourth takes 7 percent, and fifth gets 5 percent. The runner-up prize alone exceeds $450,000, creating a strong financial case for entering top horses even against stiff competition. That kind of deep payout pool is rare in summer racing and is likely to draw connections who might otherwise wait for the Travers Stakes in August.

Wagering Significance

A doubled purse typically means a more compelling field, which in turn means better betting interest and deeper wagering pools. Horse racing bettors should mark June 10 as the date to watch for the first nomination list, which will give an early read on what caliber of horse is pointing toward the race. The Breeders’ Cup qualifier designation adds a second layer of narrative, as the Stephen Foster winner will enter the fall as a live contender for one of the most prestigious races in the sport. Major horse racing wagering platforms are expected to carry full exotic pools on the race.
