SEC Championship Odds: Georgia and Texas Sit Atop a Loaded Conference

The SEC’s title race is shaping up as a two-horse show before a single snap of the 2026 season, with Georgia and Texas trading places atop sportsbook boards depending on where you look. Everyone else in the conference is playing from behind, and the gap between the co-favorites and the rest of the field is wide enough to notice.

Where the Odds Stand Right Now

As of early August, Georgia and Texas are essentially co-favorites to win the SEC Championship, with lines bouncing between +260 and +330 depending on the book. FanDuel has Georgia at +290 and Texas at +330, while other shops like Bovada list Texas as the slight favorite at +280 with Georgia at +350. Either way, it’s a two-team race at the top, then a real drop to the chasing pack.

Alabama and LSU sit in the next tier around +800 to +900, with Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Oklahoma bunched close behind in the 9-1 to 13-1 range. Tennessee, Florida and Missouri round out the group with a realistic shot at a surprise run, while the rest of the conference is priced more as lottery tickets than genuine contenders.

Top Contenders

Georgia has won the last two SEC titles under Kirby Smart, and the Bulldogs return Gunner Stockton for a second year as the starting quarterback after he took over during the 2025 stretch run. Advanced models project Georgia for roughly 9.3 wins, the highest mark in the league, and Smart’s program has been the conference’s most consistent operation for the better part of a decade. Georgia also sits near the top of the national title odds, a reflection of just how much the market trusts this roster beyond the SEC race alone.

Texas enters with arguably the loudest hype of any team in the country. Arch Manning is heading into his second full season as the starter after an up-and-down but promising 2025, and the Longhorns went out and added a top-five transfer portal class, headlined by former Auburn receiver Cam Coleman. Texas went 10-3 a year ago and there’s real buzz about the Longhorns pushing for a preseason No. 1 ranking, even if some evaluators still want to see Manning’s ceiling play out over a full season before crowning him.

Alabama sits a tier back at +800 to +850 after a heavy round of NFL departures, having lost quarterback Ty Simpson (a first-round pick), offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor and receiver Germie Bernard. LSU is priced at +700 to +900 despite a rocky 7-6 finish in 2025 under Brian Kelly, which tells you the market still respects the roster talent in Baton Rouge even after a down year. Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Oklahoma all cluster in the 9-1 to 13-1 range as teams capable of crashing the top of the standings if the favorites slip.

Why the Market Has It This Close at the Top

The case for Georgia is simple continuity. Stockton gets a full offseason as the unquestioned starter, the program has reloaded on both lines again, and Smart has proven he can win the SEC even in years when Georgia isn’t the most talented roster on paper. Projected win totals back that up, with Georgia’s number sitting highest of any team in the league.

Texas counters with pure ceiling. Manning’s raw talent has never been the question — his consistency over a full slate is — and the Longhorns spent the offseason making sure he won’t have to carry the offense alone. Adding a receiver of Coleman’s caliber gives Manning another home-run threat, and Texas also caught a break with its 2026 schedule, avoiding both Alabama and Georgia in cross-division play.

Texas missing both Alabama and Georgia on its 2026 schedule is the kind of scheduling break that turns a talented team into a favorite.

That schedule quirk matters more than it might seem at first glance. Georgia still has to beat everybody in its path, including a brutal SEC gauntlet, while Texas gets a clearer runway to Atlanta if Manning plays like the quarterback his supporters believe he can be.

LSU is the name worth watching beneath the co-favorites. A 7-6 season with the LSU brand of overall roster talent is the profile teams have rebounded from before, and if the Tigers clean up the mistakes that plagued them last fall, that +700 to +900 price looks like real value against the board’s clear top two.

The Best Bet

Georgia’s continuity at quarterback and Smart’s track record make the Bulldogs the safer play, but Texas offers a puncher’s chance at a discount given the softer schedule and the talent infusion around Manning. This is a market where paying up for the favorite you trust more makes more sense than searching for a long shot.

  • Pick: Georgia +290
  • Value alternative: LSU +700

Georgia’s floor is simply higher than anyone else in the conference right now, and until Stockton or Smart give a reason to doubt that, the Bulldogs remain the safest way to bet the SEC.
