Texas Longhorns vs Florida Gators

We all thought that this matchup would be one of the best of this week when looking ahead at the start of the season. However, the Longhorns already lost their opener to OSU, and Arch Manning has had some struggles. Combine that with their opponents in this one being just 1-3 now, and the excitement has dissipated a bit.

Texas has won 3 straight since their opening loss, but those wins came over San Jose St, UTEP, and Sam Houston. Against San Jose St and Sam Houston, Arch Manning looked great, but he struggled big time against a strong OSU defense and even against a mediocre UTEP defense.

The driving force for the Longhorns to this point has been their defense. They are allowing just 6ppg, and even in their loss, the 14 they allowed to OSU was the fewest points the Buckeyes have scored in a game this season. The defense will likely be leaned on once again in this matchup on the road in the swamp.

Billy, Billy, Billy. It has not been a good start for Coach Billy Napier and the Gators to say it mildly. However, they are playing arguably the toughest schedule in the country. The loss to then-unranked USF looked terrible, but now even they look like a top 25 team. The bottom line with this Gator team is that DJ Lagway and the offense have been abysmal.

They are averaging just 11ppg over their last 3, we are throwing out the 55 they put up over lowly Long Island in their opener. However, the defense has been sneaky solid. They allowed just 18 points to USF and 20 to LSU. And just last week, they held Miami in check until the final 4 minutes of the game. They had allowed just 13 points before Miami picked up 2 late touchdowns to close the door on the game.

Both defenses have been extremely solid all season, while both offenses have struggled. If we had to pick a side, we would lean toward Florida and the points as they will be in a familiar type of game here. Texas is going to have to find a way to win with Arch and the offense struggling in this one. Now, Florida is certainly not OSU, but they are also not UTEP, and we expect them to keep this one close, but the points to all come at a premium.

Vanderbilt Commodores vs Alabama Crimson Tide

Who would have thought that we would be seeing an undefeated Vandy team coming into Tuscaloosa for this matchup when the schedules were released earlier in the year? Not many, but here we are and their QB Diego Pavia has been making a case for a Heisman candidacy. He has thrown for over 1200 yards, run for almost 300 and has accounted for 15 of the team’s touchdowns while throwing just 3 interceptions and being sacked the same number of times.

Vandy is coming off a 55-35 win over Utah State where Pavia had to carry them with 6 total touchdowns and almost 400 yards of total offense. This is now back-to-back games where the Commodores have allowed over 20 points but have put up a total of 125 of their own. The defense showed up when it mattered against then #11 South Carolina a couple of weeks ago when they held the Gamecocks to just 7 points, so the ability to lock in on defense is there.

Alabama had Tide fans down bad after opening the season with a 31-17 loss to unranked FSU. However, that loss does not look nearly as bad after the Noles found themselves ranked in the top of the polls lately. To DeBoer’s credit, he kept the team motivated and that motivation led an enormous road win over rival Georgia last week. The 24-21 win was cemented by the incredible job of their defense that held the Bulldogs to just 7 points in the 2nd half while the Tide offense was unable to get any traction and hold their lead.

We think the Vandy defense is going to come to play like they did on the road against South Carolina. The Bama offense completely sputtered in the 2nd half last weekend and now the Tide is coming off an enormous emotional win. That said, the Tide defense will be the toughest one that Pavia has faced this season and should be able to keep him in check for the most part. We lean the Tide here a bit but the 10.5 is just too much and feel safer playing the under in a game we expect both defenses to shine.

Best Bet: UNDER 55.5
