Best Bet to Win AAC: UTSA Roadrunners

The Roadrunners stumbled out of the gate last season going just 1-2. From there, they won 10 straight games and picked up a bowl berth against Troy. Unfortunately, they were only able to muster 12 points and lost 18-12 to Troy.

The offense had not struggled like that during the season. In fact, they ranked 16th in the country as they averaged 35.6ppg. Frank Harris averaged over 330 total yards per game last season and is back.

Harris is one of 16 returning starters for Jeff Traylor. Wideout Zakhari Franklin left for Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss but De'Corian Clark and Joshua Cephus and back.

Kevorian Barnes will lead the way from the backfield and will be running behind an experienced offensive line. The defense is going to be tough again as most starters are back. Last season, they were 35th in the country in red zone defense.

Best Bet to Win CUSA: New Mexico State Aggies

The Aggies finished off strong in 2022. A 24-19 bowl game victory over Bowling Green capped off a 6-1 run to finish the season. That came after a 1-5 start to the season for NMST. The defense was solid, but the offense was only able to average 19.5ppg.

Jerry Kill lifted the Aggies from a 2-10 program in 2021 to 7-6 last season. The jump to Conference USA could make things easier for the Aggies after the program was an Independent for the last 5 years. Eight starters are back from an offense that will once again be led by Diego Pavia.

He has got a decent group of running backs and receivers at his disposal. Coach Kill saw his defense go from allowing 40.4ppg to just 23.9 in a year. This is obviously a long shot to win the conference, but it seems very well worth the risk here.

Best Bet to Win MAC: Miami Ohio RedHawks

It was below a mediocre season last year for the RedHawks. That said, they still were able to do enough to get into a bowl game. They squandered their opportunity and lost 24-20 to UAB. They did have a top 40 defense, but the offense finished well outside the top 100.

They were one of the worst teams in the country on 3rd down. A big part of their offense struggles was due to Brett Gabbert missing a majority of the season due to injury. He is back this season and will surely bring a boost to the offense. He did lose two linemen to Iowa and Oklahoma but if they can sure up their spots, the offense has a chance to surprise many.

The defense held teams to just 22.6ppg last season and has a chance to be even stronger this season. The price we get on them here is due to their schedule. They must face Toledo in the cross over and go on the road to Ohio. If they can steal 1 of those, the title game could be possible.

Best Bet to Win Mountain West: Boise St. Broncos

It was another good season in comparison to most teams in the country. The Broncos finished 9-4 on the season and then defeated North Texas in the Miami Beach Bowl 35-32. A 17-point loss to UTEP as a 17-point favorite early in the season put the brakes on any hopes of a title. The defense was strong and allowed only 20.5ppg which ranked 14th in the country.

Andy Avalos has a program looking to return to the top of the conference this season. 2019 was the last year they were able to sit atop the Mountain West. Dual threat QB, Taylen Green, is back after accumulating 2,500+ total yards and 24 touchdowns last year.

The Broncos not only have Green’s legs but also Ahston Jeanty and George Holani that will be the best RB duo in the conference. The defense will be strong once again but the 20.5ppg may be tough to replicate. That said, the Broncos are tremendous favorites to win the conference for a reason.

Best Bet to Win Sun Belt: Troy Trojans

Troy got the job done last season and won the Sun Belt. That 1-2 start of the season was forgotten about when the Trojans won 11 straight which included the 45-26 demolishing of Coastal Carolina in the title game and UTSA in their bowl game 18-12. The top 10 defense of the Trojans was special and proved so with holding UTSA to 12 in the bowl game after the Roadrunners had averaged 35.6ppg.

Gunnar Watson tossed 12 picks last season and is something he cannot do this season. He lost his top receivers but has Kimani Vidal back in the backfield who will provide relief for the passing game.

No matter what the offense does, the defense will keep the Trojans in every game they play once again this year. With most of the defense returning, we believe Troy will also be returning to the title game and repeating.
