Big 12 Championship Odds: Can Anyone Stop Texas Tech From Repeating?

Texas Tech steamrolled its way to a school-record 12 wins and the program’s first-ever Big 12 title last season, and the oddsmakers aren’t exactly bracing for a changing of the guard. The Red Raiders opened as short favorites to win the conference again, sitting right around even money at FanDuel, with the rest of the league scattered well behind them on the board.

Where the Odds Stand

Texas Tech is priced at roughly +100 to win the Big 12 outright, an eye-catching number for a team that just lost its starting quarterback, its top pass rusher, and its top receiver to the NFL. BYU is next up at around +550 to +650, followed by Utah in the +800 to +850 range. From there it’s a steep drop-off: Kansas State and Houston sit in the mid-teens (+1400 to +1800), while TCU, Arizona and Arizona State are bunched together as distant longshots in the 20-1 to 25-1 range. Polymarket’s implied probabilities tell a similar story, giving Texas Tech a full 50% share of the market with BYU next at just 14%.

Top Contenders

Texas Tech is the story until someone proves otherwise. Joey McGuire’s group went 12-2 in 2025, throttled BYU 34-7 in the Big 12 title game, and made the program’s first College Football Playoff appearance. The catch is the roster turnover: quarterback Behren Morton, linebacker Jacob Rodriguez and receiver David Bailey are all gone. Even with that talent drain, projection models still have the Red Raiders as a top-10 team nationally and the clear class of the league, forecasting around 10.6 wins with the next closest team more than a full game behind.

BYU is the obvious challenger, and it’s built around one player: sophomore quarterback Bear Bachmeier. He threw for over 3,000 yards and 15 touchdowns as a true freshman while leading the Cougars to a 12-2 season and Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year honors. The tape against Texas Tech, though, is the red flag bettors keep coming back to — BYU managed just 14 total points across two meetings with the Red Raiders last year, with Bachmeier tossing three interceptions in that stretch. A full offseason as the unquestioned starter should help him take the leap the Cougars need.

Utah rounds out the top tier after climbing back into relevance, with projections pegging the Utes around 8.6 wins. Kansas State and Houston headline the next group as teams capable of crashing the top of the standings if the favorites stumble, and Oklahoma State has drawn some sprinkle interest as a value dark horse buried in the 30-1 range.

Why the Gap Is So Wide

The market isn’t just reacting to last year’s results — it’s projecting a real talent gap. Texas Tech is forecast to win roughly 7.7 games in Big 12 play alone, with BYU the next closest projected team at 6.6. Analysts putting together power ratings have the Red Raiders as double-digit favorites in essentially every game on their 2026 schedule, a rare luxury in a conference known for chaos and upsets.

Texas Tech has at least a 70% projected chance of reaching the Big 12 Championship Game for a second straight year.

That’s a stunning number for a 16-team league that prides itself on parity. It also means the value in this market may not be at the top of the board at all, but in finding the right team to bet against Texas Tech reaching the title game — or picking off BYU at plus money if Bachmeier’s sophomore leap is real.

Worth watching: the Big 12 has produced a new conference champion in back-to-back years before, and this league’s [futures betting](https://eatwatchbet.com/betting-tools/futures-betting/) markets have burned favorites in the past when a projected dominant team’s roster losses proved heavier than expected.

The Best Bet

Texas Tech at even money isn’t thrilling from a payout standpoint, but the projections back up the price — a near double-digit win total and a schedule where they’re favored in nearly every game make them the safest play on the board. For value, BYU at +550 to +650 offers real upside if Bachmeier avoids the turnovers that sank the Cougars against Tech last season.

  • Pick: Texas Tech +100
  • Value alternative: BYU +600

Until another team proves it can hang with the Red Raiders’ defense and revamped roster, this is Texas Tech’s conference to lose — and the numbers say they probably won’t.
