Kansas State has been riding the back of the dual-threat QB, Avery Johnson to a 3-0 start this season. Johnson is averaging 163 yards per game with 6 touchdowns through the air but has added 62.3 yards on the ground per game as well.
His legs provided a lift in their latest game against Arizona where he continually picked 3rd downs with scrambling and led them to a 31-7 victory. They did struggle a bit on the road in the previous game against Tulane where they trailed by 10 at the break but came back to win 34-27. The Wildcats will need to avoid looking ahead of these unranked Cougars as they will face #14 Oklahoma State next week
BYU is undefeated but unranked to this point in the season. After a 41-13 beating of Southern Illinois in their opener, BYU snuck out an 18-15 win over SMU on the road.
Last week, they handled a Wyoming team on the road and finished the game 34-14. Jake Retzlaff has been a bit up and done while under center this season for BYU. Over his last 2 games, he has thrown for 4 touchdowns but also gave the ball away 3 times. Like Johnson of KSU, Retzlaff also uses his legs a bunch and leads the Cougars in rushing on the season.
Saturday, October 12 at 4:00 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
Arizona Wildcats | -2.5 (-107) | -122 | O 54.5 (-105) |
BYU Cougars | +2.5 (-114) | +104 | U 54.5 (-115) |
Kansas State looked great last week against Arizona and has the public backing them here in this matchup. BYU is not a name that many believe will play a factor down the stretch this season, but we believe they will be amped up for this one at home Saturday night.
KSU will struggle to keep Retzlaff under wraps and he will keep Utah in the game until late in this one. We are going to back the Cougars catching nearly a touchdown spread at home.
Key Betting Trends for K-State vs BYU
#12 Utah heads into Boone Pickens Stadium this Saturday to take on #14 ranked Oklahoma State in a battle that could shift the balance of the Big 12. The Utes defeated all 3 of their opponents by an average of 25.6 points per game.
Baylor was their toughest test to date as they won that game 23-12 but that score was a bit misleading. Utah led 23-3 midway through the 4th quarter before giving up a late 9 points.
However, their QB Cam Rising, did sustain an injury that kept him out of their latest game which was a 38-21 victory over in-state rival Utah State. He is listed as probable for this contest but is something to keep an eye on.
Oklahoma State is 3-0 but has yet to face a ranked team to this point. Arkansas gave them a bit of a test in their 2nd game where they came back from a 21-7 halftime deficit.
Ollie Gordon, the preseason Heisman candidate at running back has seemingly lost his footing. After racking up over 125 yards and 3 touchdowns in the opener, he has gone for just 90 yards on 34 carries combined over the last 2 games.
Luckily, Alan Bowman has had a good handle on the passing attack and has thrown for 722 yards and 6 touchdowns with just 1 interception over the last 2 games. They will need to get the ground game going again, soon rather than later.
Utah is allowing over 124 rushing yards per game and just 180 through the air. They are a top 25 team in points allowed per game as well.
We do not like how the Cowboys have been relying on the passing game so much, but this could be an opportunity for them to reestablish Gordon and the rushing attack. Cam Rising will be back, but we do not know how effective he will be in this one.
The Pokes have KSU next week and know that they will need to be on top of their game for this 2-game stretch. We like Oklahoma State to get this one done at home.
