The 30-4 Florida Gators take on the 30-4 Houston Cougars in the 2025 National Championship game. A chalky bracket has produced two of the more memorable Final 4 games this decade, with Walter Clayton Jr. and Florida’s late comeback to take down Auburn, while Houston had no business beating Duke, utilizing their full-court defense to wreak havoc on Cooper Flagg’s Blue Devil legacy.
The Gators are driven by their high-octane offense that scored the 3rd most points per game this year while making around 10 three-pointers per contest. Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars are driven by their defense, allowing 70 points or less in all but one of their NCAA tournament games. Offense vs. Defense. Golden vs. Sampson. A new championship will be crowned tonight in San Antonio.
Since the beginning of March, I’ve been choosing the Gators to make their way to this spot over and over again. Todd Golden is an incredible Head Coach. A modern offense that never seems to sputter. A competent defense led by athletic wings and tall bigs. A point guard who has turned into a true shot-making floor general.
This team has it all and has shown they can win in a variety of ways through this run to the championship game. Late game comebacks against UConn, Texas Tech, and Auburn have led the Gators here, and with Walter Clayton Jr. stringing together two straight 30-point games, take Florida’s shot making to get past a Houston team that hasn’t eclipsed the 70-point mark since their close Round of 32 win against Gonzaga.
The Gators went 8/21 from beyond the arc against Auburn. The Tigers had a disciplined defense and focused on physicality early. While Houston possesses the best defense in the nation, I think Florida knows that pace and shot making from beyond the arc early on in this game will be key in order for Martin, Clayton Jr., and Richard to be the last men standing tonight.
Houston allowed 7 threes against Duke, 8 against Purdue, and 9 against Gonzaga. While none of these teams hit the magical number of 10, in the three close games, Houston played opponents who shot it 24/64 (37.5%) from beyond the arc. With Florida now comfortable shooting their way back into a game inside the Alamodome, I like Florida to get out to a quick start with a handful of threes.
The x-factors for Florida are Will Richard and Thomas Haugh. Haugh has had an outstanding tournament. He’s averaging 13 PPG and 7.4 RPG from the stretch 4 spot while truly making a difference in Florida’s last three wins down the stretch.
He shot it 4 of 6 from beyond the arc against Texas Tech in their dramatic win and then followed that up with a 12-point performance against Auburn on just 7 shots. Haugh can knock it down from deep and get to the line. With the focus on Walter Clayton Jr., I think Haugh gets some open looks early in this game.
