NCAA Football Championship Quick Facts

  • The College Football Playoff National Championship determines the NCAA Division I FBS champion and has been played annually since the 2014 season, replacing the BCS National Championship Game.
  • Beginning with the 2024 season, the College Football Playoff expanded from four teams to a 12-team format, creating the largest postseason in modern major college football history.
  • Alabama leads the CFP era with three national championships, while Georgia has won two. The SEC has produced more national champions than any other conference in the CFP era.
  • The championship game is played at a neutral site each January after teams advance through the College Football Playoff bracket.
  • The national champion receives the College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy, a 26.5-inch, 35-pound trophy made of bronze, stainless steel, and 24-karat gold plating.

NCAA Football Championship Betting Trends

  • National champions almost always enter the season as legitimate contenders. Since the CFP began, every champion opened the year at 40-1 or shorter to win the title, making true long-shot winners extremely rare.
  • Conference strength matters. The SEC and Big Ten have dominated the playoff era, producing the overwhelming majority of championship game participants and national champions.
  • Favorites have historically performed well in the national championship game, winning seven of the first 10 CFP title games outright while also posting a winning record against the spread.
  • Quarterback play is often the deciding factor. Nearly every CFP champion has featured an NFL-caliber quarterback or a future first-round draft pick under center.
  • Don’t overreact to preseason rankings. Teams outside the preseason top five have regularly reached the playoff and won the national title, making early-season value bets on elite programs outside the favorites worthwhile.
