Super Bowl Betting Trends

  • Win the game, cover the number: the outright winner has covered the spread in 51 of 60 Super Bowls, so picking the straight-up winner usually cashes the spread too.
  • The all-time favorite-vs-underdog ATS record is nearly even (29–28–2 in favorites’ favor), but underdogs have been the sharper modern play, covering 17 of the last 26.
  • Heavy chalk has been a trap: since 2000, favorites laying 4.5 or more points are just 2–11 against the spread.
  • Totals are a historical coin flip (30–29 to the over all-time), yet the UNDER has hit in six of the last eight Super Bowls.
  • First blood matters — the team that scores first has gone on to win roughly two-thirds of the time (38 of 59).
