Sunday’s 1:00 p.m. kickoff at MetLife Stadium is the rare NFL game where the public prediction market looks like a coin flip, even though the two teams arrive in completely different moods. As of Saturday morning, traders were pricing the New Orleans Saints at 50.5 cents and the New York Giants at 49.5 cents on the dollar, which is about as close to a pick’em as a market can get. Roughly $174,000 changed hands on the event over the last 24 hours, so plenty of people have an opinion.
A Pick’em Market With a Strange Backstory
The prediction-market price is only half the story, because the sportsbook line has already done a flip-flop this week. The Giants were originally favored by 2.5 points, and by the latest DraftKings numbers the Saints had moved to a 1.5-point favorite at +102, with the Giants at +1.5 (-122) and a total of 45.5. Earlier in the week the moneyline sat at Saints -118 and Giants -102. Lines have bounced around enough that the prediction-market price is the cleanest snapshot of where the crowd actually lands.
If you are new to reading prices like these, our primer on how betting odds work explains why a 50.5 percent market price and a -118 moneyline are really telling you nearly the same thing.
Why the Saints Are Still Priced Like a Contender
On paper, New Orleans has no business being favored in anything. The Saints are 1-4, have lost three straight, and sit last in the NFC South after a 23-13 loss to the Vikings last week. The defense is the headline problem: 30.2 points allowed per game ranks 31st in the league, and the unit ranks 31st in defensive DVOA, with the team 30th in total DVOA at -37.7 percent.
So why would the market lean their way at all? Part of it is the injury report on the other side, and part of it is that the Saints have real pieces on offense when healthy. Quarterback Tyler Shough has thrown for 1,299 yards with nine touchdowns and five interceptions, and receiver Chris Olave has 39 catches for 537 yards. The catch is that Shough has been sacked 13 times, there is a reported hand injury to monitor, and both Alvin Kamara and Olave are listed as questionable. The ground game has managed just 409 rushing yards through five games, which puts even more weight on a banged-up passing attack. Linebacker Anfernee Jennings is out with a knee injury.
The Giants Are Winning in Weird Ways
New York is 3-1-1 and leads the NFC East, fresh off a 27-27 overtime tie with Washington in which the Giants had to rally from two touchdowns down. With Jaxson Dart on injured reserve with a knee injury, Jameis Winston has stepped in and posted 805 yards on 76-of-132 passing with six touchdowns and three interceptions, including three touchdown passes in each of his last two games. The storyline writes itself: Winston was a Saints quarterback starting in 2020, and now he gets to face a former team.
The defense is quietly the best part of this roster. The Giants lead the league with six interceptions, rank ninth in scoring defense at 21.2 points allowed per game, and sit seventh against the pass at 219.8 yards allowed. Against a Saints offense that has to throw to survive, that matchup is a real problem. The Giants are also 4-1 against the spread, while New Orleans is 2-3.
The Injury Wildcard on Both Sidelines
The Giants are not entirely clean either. Offensive lineman Jermaine Eluemunor (calf) and left tackle Andrew Thomas (groin) are both questionable, and a thin protection group against a Saints pass rush is the one scenario where the underdog narrative gets interesting. If both of them sit, the market could move quickly before kickoff, which is why prediction-market prices are worth refreshing right up until Sunday. Prediction and Best Bet
The market says toss-up, but the underlying numbers lean toward the home side. A 4-1 ATS Giants team with a ball-hawking defense is facing a Saints roster that is giving up points at a bottom-three rate and could be missing its top skill players. One model also leans toward the Giants at +1.5, which lines up with how the matchup reads.
- Prediction: Giants 24, Saints 20
- Best bet: Giants +1.5 on the spread
Getting a 49.5 percent price on a home team with the better defense and the better recent form feels like the right side of a coin-flip market, and the extra cushion on the spread only helps.
