Prediction Markets Watch: Makhachev-Garry Draws Big Money at UFC 330, MLB Totals Split the Board

Polymarket bettors are piling onto Islam Makhachev ahead of UFC 330, while MLB totals for Marlins-Reds, Padres-Guardians, and Red Sox-Pirates split the crowd right down the middle.

Prediction markets are having a moment this week, and the smart money — or at least the loud money — is circling a handful of storylines. From a title fight that’s drawing serious volume on Polymarket to a trio of MLB totals that split the crowd right down the middle, bettors are lining up behind their gut feelings and their spreadsheets in almost equal measure. Here’s what the numbers are saying heading into the weekend.

Everyone’s Watching the Same Fight

Nothing on the board is close to matching the buzz around UFC 330. Islam Makhachev’s welterweight title defense against Ian Machado Garry pulled in $652,565 in 24-hour volume on Polymarket — more than six times the next-busiest market — and the crowd there has Makhachev at 75.5% to Garry’s 24.5%. That lines up with where UFC odds sit at the sportsbooks, where Makhachev is priced between -340 and -350 and Garry sits as a +255 to +270 underdog.

Makhachev is carrying a 16-fight UFC winning streak into the cage, one of the most dominant runs the promotion has ever seen, and he’s defending the belt for the first time after moving up in weight to win it at UFC 322. Garry isn’t just a name attached to the marquee, either — he punched his way into title contention with wins over Carlos Prates and former champion Belal Muhammad. The stylistic contrast is the whole story here: Makhachev’s wrestling and submission pressure against a fighter who spends only about 11% of his UFC time on the mat and boasts 80% takedown defense.

That gap between the raw favorite and the actual difficulty of the matchup is why some sharper analysis is steering around the moneyline entirely. CBS Sports’ best bet on the card is Garry +9.5 on the fight-decision spread, essentially a hedge against Makhachev running away with the scorecards. Other model-driven previews are leaning toward the fight going the distance and favoring the over on total rounds, betting that Garry’s length and footwork at least make this competitive even if the outcome doesn’t change. It’s a reminder that a market being lopsided doesn’t always mean the action inside the cage will be.

Baseball’s Crowd Can’t Agree on Anything

While the UFC market is basically a consensus pick with an asterisk, the MLB totals on the board tonight are split closer to a coin flip — which tends to happen when the pitching matchups are this good. Miami’s Sandy Alcantara (13-6, 3.52 ERA, 128 strikeouts) faces off with Cincinnati’s Chase Burns (13-2, 2.61 ERA, 143 strikeouts) in a game where Polymarket has the over at 53.5% against a 7.5 total. Both pitchers have been money for bettors lately — Alcantara’s starts have gone 16-9 against the spread this season, Burns’ have gone 16-6 — and that kind of form is exactly why some handicappers are looking at a No Run First Inning angle instead of picking a side on the full-game total.

The Padres-Guardians total is drawing the opposite lean, with the market favoring the under at 52.5% despite Michael King and Gavin Williams both carrying strikeout-heavy profiles — Williams’ 185 strikeouts rank among the better marks in the league this season. Cleveland is a moneyline favorite at -127 even though San Diego owns the better overall record, which tells you the market is pricing this as a pitcher’s duel more than a team-strength mismatch. Meanwhile in Pittsburgh, the Red Sox-Pirates total sits at 55.5% over, with Boston’s Jake Bennett bringing a tidy 3.17 ERA against a Pirates lineup that’s seen plenty of runs against Bubba Chandler’s 4.26 ERA this year despite his strikeout numbers looking sharp on paper.

What the Split Says About Value

The pattern across these markets is worth paying attention to if you like betting outside the mainstream boards. When a market gets this lopsided — like Makhachev at 75.5% — the value conversation shifts away from who wins and toward how the underlying prop markets are priced, which is exactly why the decision-spread and distance bets are getting more attention than the straight moneyline. When a market sits near 50-50, like the MLB totals tonight, it’s usually because the pitching is legitimately even on both sides, and first-inning or first-few-innings props can be sharper plays than the full-game number.

None of this is a guarantee, but it is a useful cross-check. Prediction markets aggregate a different pool of money than traditional sportsbooks, and when the two line up — as they largely do on Makhachev — that’s a signal worth noting. When they diverge even slightly, as with some of tonight’s MLB unders and overs, that’s usually where the more interesting bets are hiding.

Prediction and Best Bet

Makhachev remains the right side to be on at UFC 330, but the smarter structure is the fight going the distance rather than a knockout or clean stoppage bet — Garry’s defensive tools are too good to assume an easy night for the champion. On the baseball side, the Alcantara-Burns pitching matchup in Cincinnati is the one worth building a first-innings angle around given how well both starters have pitched all season.

  • Prediction: Makhachev wins a competitive decision or later stoppage over Garry
  • Best Bet: Fight Goes The Distance / Makhachev-Garry over 3.5 rounds

With volume this heavy on one side and the styles this contrasting, betting the process — not just the favorite — is where the real edge sits this week.
