Prediction Markets Favor Texans Over Titans Despite 0-4 Start in Week 5 Showdown

Prediction markets have Houston as a heavy favorite over Tennessee despite both teams sitting winless — here is why bettors trust the Texans in Week 5.

Winless teams don’t usually draw this much betting market confidence for one side, but that’s exactly the story heading into Sunday’s AFC South get-together between the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium. Both clubs sit at 0-4, both are still searching for their first win of the season, and yet prediction markets and sportsbooks alike are treating this Week 5 matchup as anything but a coin flip.

What the Markets Are Saying About Texans-Titans

On Polymarket, bettors have pushed Houston’s moneyline probability up to roughly 75.5%, compared to just 24.5% for Tennessee — a lopsided split for a game between two teams that haven’t tasted victory all year. Traditional sportsbooks tell a similar story: the Texans opened as 3.5-point favorites and have since been bet up to -7 or -7.5, with moneyline prices sitting around -345 to -375 on Houston and +275 to +295 on the Titans. ESPN’s analytics model lands in the same neighborhood, giving Houston a 66.6% win probability. The total has also shrunk, sliding from the high 30s down to 37.5-38.5, among the lowest on the entire Week 5 board.

That kind of market movement toward a winless team says plenty about how differently oddsmakers view these two 0-4 rosters. For bettors tracking live NFL lines throughout the week, checking the NFL odds board is the easiest way to see how this number continues to shift leading up to kickoff.

Why Houston Is Still the Betting Favorite Despite 0-4

The Texans’ record doesn’t match the way they’ve actually played. Houston has been favored in three of its last three games and has dropped a string of tight, competitive losses rather than blowouts — a 34-30 defeat to Dallas, a 19-17 road loss at Indianapolis, and a 16-13 nail-biter at Carolina among them. Quarterback C.J. Stroud has been a major reason markets still trust this team: he’s thrown for 1,141 yards through four games, good for fifth in the NFL, with five touchdowns and zero interceptions and a 95.9 passer rating. He was at his best last week against Dallas, throwing for 347 yards and two scores, and he torched Tennessee for 233 yards the last time these two teams met.

Wide receiver Nico Collins has been nearly unstoppable in the two games he’s played healthy this season, hauling in 14 catches for 193 yards and three touchdowns on just 18 targets. Houston also owns the head-to-head history here, riding a three-game winning streak over Tennessee that includes a 26-0 shutout and a 16-13 win last season, though the average margin across the last ten meetings (6.3 points) is actually tighter than the current week’s spread suggests.

Where Tennessee Stands

The Titans have been in every one of their own losses too — a 24-18 defeat at Baltimore, a 12-7 setback against the Giants, and a 24-20 loss to Philadelphia — but rookie-level quarterback Cam Ward simply hasn’t produced the way Stroud has. Ward has thrown for 726 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions through four games, a solid learning-curve line but one that leaves him well behind Houston’s signal-caller in efficiency and overall rating. Tennessee will also be without safety Amani Hooker, who’s been ruled out with a concussion, while receiver Carnell Tate is dealing with a back issue but is expected to suit up. On the Houston side, wideout Tank Dell remains on injured reserve and won’t return before October 18, though several other Texans listed as questionable practiced in full this week and are trending toward availability.

Betting trends back up the market’s skepticism of Tennessee: the Titans are 2-2 against the spread this season, while Houston has yet to cover a single game, sitting 0-4 ATS despite the gaudy favorite status in Vegas. That disconnect between straight-up record, against-the-spread record, and market confidence is part of what makes this one of the more interesting prediction-market storylines of Week 5.

What It Means for Sunday

With kickoff set for 1:00 PM ET and mild conditions expected around 68 degrees in Nashville, this shapes up as a game where the betting markets are banking heavily on talent and recent quarterback play winning out over win-loss record. Stroud’s recent surge, Collins’ big-play ability, and Houston’s history of close calls against good teams all point to why the public and sharp money alike have gravitated toward the Texans here, even with two winless clubs squaring off. Whether Houston can finally convert one of these competitive performances into an actual win — rather than another one-score defeat — is the question both bettors and prediction markets are watching closely this week.
