Golden Knights vs Ducks Game 3 Prediction: Series Flips to Anaheim in a Winner-Take-the-Momentum Clash

The Golden Knights and Ducks have split the first two games with an identical 3-1 score in each contest — now the series flips to Anaheim, where the Ducks dominate at home and the hockey world is watching.

After splitting the first two games in Las Vegas, the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks are headed to the Honda Center for what promises to be one of the most pivotal games of the second round. Game 3 tips off at 9:30 p.m. ET on Friday night in Anaheim, California, and for the Ducks, it doesn’t get more important than this. Winning at home to take a 2-1 series lead would be a massive psychological swing in a series that has been tighter than most expected heading in.

Vegas won Game 1 by a score of 3-1, then Anaheim turned around and took Game 2 by the same exact score. Two games, two victories by the same margin, and now the series shifts to Southern California where the Ducks have been one of the better home teams all season. The Ducks finished the regular year at 43-33-6, including a 24-13-4 home record. The Golden Knights were 39-26-17 overall, with a 19-14-8 away mark that’s serviceable but not dominant on the road.

Tight Odds Reflect a Series That’s Been Decided by Inches

The betting market has this one as close to a pick’em as you’ll find. The Golden Knights opened at -112 on the moneyline, with the Ducks at -108 — essentially a coinflip according to the books. The total opened at 6.0 and has settled around 5.5, with the Over attracting around -135 juice on most platforms. The puck line sits at Golden Knights -1.5 (+225), reflecting just how even this series has been — covering by two is a tall order for either team right now.

What makes the market movement interesting is that sharp analysts are leaning heavily toward the Over. Vegas goaltender Carter Hart has posted a .951 save percentage in this series, which analytics models flag as unsustainable over a best-of-seven. Anaheim starter Lukas Dostal has been similarly sharp at .930. Both teams have posted shooting percentages around 6-7 percent at five-on-five, well below what we’d typically expect given how many high-danger chances each side is generating. The underlying numbers suggest more goals are coming.

Ducks Have Been Dominating at Five-on-Five; Golden Knights Banking on Hart

When you dig into the advanced analytics from Games 1 and 2, a compelling story emerges. The Ducks have been outplaying Vegas at even strength in a meaningful way, posting a 57.1 Corsi For percentage and a 56.1 expected goals percentage. Simply put, Anaheim has been controlling puck possession and generating the better looks — they just haven’t been converting at the rate their underlying numbers suggest they should.

The player at the center of that expected-production conversation is Cutter Gauthier. The young Ducks forward recorded seven points in Anaheim’s first-round series, but has been held without a point through two games despite generating an elite 67.2 CF% at five-on-five and leading the team with 1.22 individual expected goals and 12 total scoring chances. Gauthier is due, and a home crowd at Honda Center for Game 3 could be exactly the environment he needs to break through.

For Vegas, Mark Stone has been the veteran presence that ties together the Golden Knights’ forward group. His ability to win battles, set up teammates, and come up big in critical moments is what makes him one of the most valuable players in the Western Conference playoffs. Defenseman Shea Theodore provides the power-play threat from the blue line that any Golden Knights run typically requires. When Theodore is clicking, Vegas’s special teams become a genuine weapon.

Other Game Picks

Carter Hart’s performance has been the story of this series. His 3.57 goals saved above expected is a staggering number, and it explains why the score line doesn’t match the underlying play. But that kind of elite goaltending is difficult to sustain over 40-plus shots a night, and with the Ducks generating the volume and quality they have been, regression seems inevitable. It’s worth noting that Hart also posted an .864 save percentage on the road in the opening round — a significant drop from his home numbers that adds another layer of intrigue to this home-ice shift.

Anaheim’s home-ice advantage is genuine. The Honda Center crowd has been electric during this run, and the Ducks have hit the Over in six of their last ten home games. With last-change advantages available to Ducks head coach Greg Cronin in Game 3, Anaheim will be able to deploy favorable matchups in a way they couldn’t at T-Mobile Arena. That tactical edge, combined with the volume of scoring chances the Ducks have been generating, makes this a game where Anaheim feels like the right side.

Prediction and Best Bet

This series has been as competitive as advertised, but the underlying numbers favor Anaheim getting the goals they deserve in Game 3. The Ducks have been the better team at even strength and have the kind of players — Gauthier in particular — who seem positioned to break out in a major way. The Golden Knights are relying heavily on Hart to continue making saves at an unsustainable rate, and home ice with last-change advantage works against that plan on Friday night.

Expect an Anaheim win in a game where the floodgates open a bit more than they have through the first two contests. The Ducks take the series lead and force Vegas into a must-win Game 4 situation on their home ice.

  • Prediction: Anaheim Ducks 4, Vegas Golden Knights 2
  • Best Bet: Over 5.5 goals (-135)

With both goaltenders due for regression based on their shooting percentages allowed and the volume of high-danger chances this series has produced, the Over at 5.5 represents clear value. This is not a lock, but the puck-luck has run out for whoever gets unlucky first in Game 3, and betting on a combined six or more goals is the logical play given how this series has been set up.
