Flyers vs Penguins Game 5 Prediction: Philadelphia Closes Out the Battle of Pennsylvania

The Flyers lead 3-1 and get plus money on the road tonight. Philadelphia has shown it can win tight games against Pittsburgh all series, and tonight should be no different.

The Philadelphia Flyers arrive in Pittsburgh with the opportunity to end Sidney Crosby’s era in Pittsburgh, leading the series three games to one heading into Game 5 at PPG Paints Arena Monday night. It is an emotionally charged atmosphere, with the legendary Penguins center playing what may be among his final games if Philadelphia closes it out. The Flyers have been dominant in this series, winning three of the first four with disciplined defense and timely scoring. Pittsburgh won Game 4 at home to stave off elimination but now must do it again — this time without the luxury of a Game 6 cushion if things go sideways.

Pittsburgh Is a Home Favorite, but the Market Leans Philadelphia

The odds reflect the complexity of this elimination game. Pittsburgh opened as a moderate home favorite at -137 on the moneyline and has held around -136 to -140 across books, with Philadelphia available at +114 to +120 as the road team. The total is set at 6 goals, with the over available at +100 and the under at -120. The puck line sits at -1.5 for Pittsburgh at +175, meaning the Flyers are -215 to cover at +1.5. Some models give Philadelphia a slight edge at 52.6 percent win probability despite being the road underdog, pointing to the series narrative and the Flyers’ superior regular-season performance. Betting trends also support Philadelphia: the Flyers are 42-47 on the moneyline as a road underdog between +100 and +200, producing 12.1 units of profit.

The Battle of Pennsylvania: Sidney Crosby’s Legacy on the Line

The “Battle of Pennsylvania” has delivered hockey at its most entertaining. Three of the four games in this series have been decided by one goal, and the teams combine for 6.5 goals per game on average — a figure that bodes well for the over. Philadelphia controlled the first three games with Travis Konecny (27 goals, 41 assists in the regular season) leading the offense and the Flyers’ penalty kill shutting down Pittsburgh’s power play. Konecny has been the most dangerous forward in this series, and Sean Couturier provides a shutdown presence that has contained Crosby at crucial moments.

Sidney Crosby (29 goals, 45 assists in the regular season) turned the series around with a dominant Game 4, willing the Penguins to a 4-2 win at home and giving the Pittsburgh crowd something to cheer. Evgeni Malkin (20 goals, 56 games) is still capable of explosive moments, and Bryan Rust (29 goals) provides energy and secondary scoring. But the Penguins finished 41-25-16 in the regular season — a solid but not overwhelming record — while Philadelphia was 43-27-12, and the Flyers’ edge in depth and consistent play across four games has been apparent.

Goaltending has been a swing factor all series. Pittsburgh’s goalie has played well in spurts but has allowed soft goals in transition. Philadelphia’s net has been more reliable, and that steadiness on the back end has been part of why the Flyers hold this commanding lead. PPG Paints Arena will be electric with desperation Monday night. Pittsburgh is 11-5 in games where they’re -137 or shorter on the moneyline, which adds a layer of caution against fading them outright. But the Flyers are 22-15 on the moneyline after playing a home game and have shown no sign of fading in this series.

Prediction and Best Bet

The Flyers have the talent, the series momentum, and a quiet confidence that comes from winning three of four games. Pittsburgh will come out with urgency fueled by Crosby’s leadership and the crowd, and this game will be competitive. But Philadelphia’s ability to win tight games has been the story of this series, and closing out a team on the road in a one-goal game is exactly what they’ve proven they can do.

  • Prediction: Flyers 4, Penguins 2
  • Best Bet: Philadelphia Flyers moneyline (+114)

Getting plus money on the team leading 3-1 in a series against a club playing with its backs against the wall is strong value. The Flyers haven’t lost back-to-back games in this series and they’re too well-coached and too deep to let Pittsburgh extend things when they have a chance to close the door tonight.
