The New Orleans Saints were one of the few teams last week to crack 25+ points in their preseason opener. They defeated the Chiefs 26-24. New starting QB, Derek Carr was 6-8 for 70 yards and a score.
Backup Jameis Winston was solid as well. He hit AT Perry on a 29-yard strike for a score to go with his 92 yards on 11 of 13 passing. He also took off twice for 7 yards each on the ground.
Jake Haener, their 3rd stringer, was decent completing just under 60% of his passes for 105 yards and a score with 1 interception. On defense, they held the Chiefs to just 5 of 13 on 3rd downs and just 83 rushing yards.
While we mentioned the Saints being a team to score over 25, the Chargers were uber impressive and put up 34 on the Rams while allowing just 17 in their win. Elijah Dotson was stellar and took his 6 opportunities on the ground to run for over 90 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Max Duggan only threw the ball 3 times for 19 yards and was sacked as many times as he threw. Easton Stick was a bit better, going 14-21 for 109 yards and a score. Overall, there were 6 rushers that combined for over 200 yards on the ground.
On defense, the Chargers held the Rams to under 100 yards on the ground and just 165 yards through the air while forcing them to just 4 of 13 on 3rd downs.
We are going against the logical plays here which would be following the Chargers who looked spectacular and the over with both teams combining for 60 points last week. The fact that oddsmakers have made the Saints on the road over a field goal favorite concerns us enough to flip to their side.
While the defense of the Chargers was able to hold the lackluster QB room of the Rams in check, they are going to have a much tougher time with Winston and Haener. On the scoring front, if you take out Dotson’s 2 scores, the Chargers did not do much on offense.
They picked up a punt return score on special teams which is not likely to reoccur. Saints take this one in a lower scoring game than both teams are expecting.
