Thursday Night Football rolls into Lambeau Field in Week 8, and for once the main attraction is not a lopsided slugfest or a snooze. The Carolina Panthers (3-3) head to Green Bay to face the Packers (4-3) at 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video, with two top-five passing offenses, two teams licking fresh wounds, and a very real NFC playoff race riding on the result. If you are looking for a reason to clear the couch, order the wings, and stay up past your bedtime on a Thursday, this one has plenty.
The Line: Packers Favored, Total Hovering Near 48
Green Bay is a home favorite of roughly a field goal and a hook. DraftKings has the Packers at -3.5 (-112) with Carolina at +3.5 (-108), while a few shops have pushed the number out to -4.5. The moneyline sits around Packers -185 and Panthers +154, and the total has bounced between 47.5 and 48.5 before settling back near 47.5. Not a ton of drama in the spread, but the total has been a bit of a yo-yo, which tells you the market is still arguing about how many points two shaky-but-explosive offenses will actually score.

The short week matters for both sides. Neither team has had time to heal, and the injury lists are doing a lot of the talking. If you want a refresher on how to read a number like -3.5 or a moneyline like -185, our how betting odds work guide breaks it down in plain English, and the NFL odds page keeps the latest numbers in one spot.
Two Bruised Teams Looking for a Bounce-Back
Both teams arrive stinging. Carolina was run out of the building by Tampa Bay, 43-13, a game that was essentially over by halftime with the Panthers trailing 33-6. The Bucs piled up 258 rushing yards, Bryce Young was sacked five times, and turnovers (two interceptions and a fumble returned for a touchdown) turned a manageable afternoon into a disaster. It was an ugly ending to a stretch that had included wins over Atlanta, Detroit and Philadelphia, and it dropped the Panthers to 3-3 while they still lead the NFC South.
Green Bay’s wound is more of the self-inflicted variety. The Packers lost 20-17 at Detroit on a walk-off field goal, a game in which they wasted chance after chance. Rookie kicker Trey Smack missed a 26-yarder early and a 35-yarder with 3:21 left, and Josh Jacobs could not hang on to a potential go-ahead touchdown pass on third down. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak, dropped Green Bay to 4-3, and left it in last place in a crowded NFC North.
The individual matchup everybody is circling is Young against the Packers’ pass rush. Young has been pressured on 44.3 percent of his dropbacks against four or fewer rushers, the highest rate among qualified passers, and 15 of his 17 sacks have come on those plays. Green Bay, under defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, pressures opponents on 38.5 percent of dropbacks without blitzing, fourth-best in the league, and seven of its league-high nine interceptions have come without sending extra rushers. That is with Micah Parsons out for the season, which has put more of the load on Lukas Van Ness, who leads the team with 27 pressures. Carolina’s offensive line is also shuffling, with right tackle Taylor Moton on injured reserve and rookie first-rounder Monroe Freeling expected to slide in at right tackle.
Carolina’s secondary is not exactly rested either. With Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson on IR, the Panthers have only a handful of healthy corners and have been scrambling to fill out the room against a top-five passing attack. On the Green Bay side, starting center Sean Rhyan left the Lions game with an ankle injury and backup Jacob Monk also went down, which put second-year pro John Williams in at center. Expect more of the same on a short week, which makes snap communication against Carolina’s rebuilt front something to watch. A Short History at Lambeau
This is the first Thursday meeting ever between these franchises, but they have played some tight games. Carolina won last season’s visit to Lambeau 16-13 on a walk-off field goal, and Green Bay still leads the all-time series 12-7 (playoffs included) while winning three of the last four. Eight of the last nine meetings, including each of the last six, have been decided by single digits, which is worth keeping in mind with a spread this close to the key number of four. Dave Canales’ Panthers beat Matt LaFleur’s Packers last year, so Green Bay has a little extra motivation to flip the script at home.
Prediction and Best Bet
Everything points toward a Packers bounce-back. Green Bay is at home, Carolina is thin at corner and offensive line, the Panthers have the league’s most pressure-prone quarterback going up against a defense that creates havoc without blitzing, and Carolina’s run defense has been shaky after giving up 258 yards on the ground to Tampa Bay. Jordan Love has been up and down this season, but a Panthers secondary full of recent arrivals is the kind of matchup that tends to get him back on track. Carolina’s offense still has enough pop to keep it respectable, which is why the points matter.
- Prediction: Green Bay Packers 27, Carolina Panthers 20
- Best Bet: Packers on the spread (-3.5)
The Packers have the pass rush, the home field and a lot to prove after letting one slip in Detroit, while the Panthers are patching holes in the secondary and at tackle on a short week. Laying 3.5 at Lambeau is not a thrill-a-minute play, but it is the one the matchup supports. A Green Bay win by a touchdown or more covers comfortably, and a field-goal win is the only realistic way this one gets sweaty. Gamble responsibly, and if you are betting on the game, shop around before you lock in the number.
