Thursday Night Football in Week 9 delivers one of the strangest setups of the season: the 5-2 Jacksonville Jaguars, fresh off a 42-7 demolition of the Colts, travel to M&T Bank Stadium to face a Baltimore Ravens team that is 4-4, last in the AFC North, and about to hand the keys to an undrafted rookie quarterback. Kickoff is Thursday, November 5 at 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video, and even if the point spread makes this look like a mismatch, there is plenty here to keep you glued to the screen.

The Line Is Big, and the Total Fell Off a Cliff

Jacksonville is a 10-point favorite at -108, with Baltimore getting +10 at -112. The number opened at Jaguars -9.5 and touched -10.5 at some books as the news on Lamar Jackson’s thumb surgery rolled in. The moneyline sits around Jaguars -500 and Ravens +330 to +350, which is the kind of price you rarely see on a Baltimore home game. The public is firmly on one side, too, with the Jaguars drawing roughly 83 to 86 percent of the money.

The more interesting movement is on the total, which opened at 42.5 and has dropped three full points to 39.5. That tells you the market expects Baltimore to struggle to score with a first-time starter and expects the game to be played at a slower pace. If you are new to reading numbers like these, our guide on how betting odds work is a handy primer before you place anything. Projection models agree with the market: one popular simulation has Jacksonville winning 24-16 with roughly a 75 percent win probability, while Polymarket has the Jaguars at 82 percent.

The short week matters for both sides. Jacksonville has had only about 100 hours to turn around from Sunday’s blowout, though the Jaguars rested their starters late in that game, which helps. Baltimore played a physical, injury-filled loss to Buffalo and now has to install a game plan around a new quarterback in a few days.

A Rookie Under Center and a Franchise Quarterback on the Shelf

The headline is Baltimore’s quarterback room. Two-time MVP Lamar Jackson hurt his right thumb on the first offensive snap against the Bills, had surgery, and is heading to injured reserve with his season possibly in jeopardy. Backup Tyler Huntley is out with turf toe, so undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano will make the first start of his NFL career. Fagnano went 10-for-21 for 91 yards with an interception in his relief debut, and he has reportedly been dealing with an ankle issue of his own. Baltimore also added Austin Reed to the practice squad as insurance. Head coach Jesse Minter has praised Fagnano as cool, calm, and collected, and the former UConn starter threw for 3,448 yards and 28 touchdowns last season.

The Ravens have lost three straight, all against AFC opponents, including a 36-10 defeat at Buffalo last week. They were 3-1 with Jackson and are 1-2 without him. Expect Baltimore to lean hard on Derrick Henry and the ground game to protect their young passer, shorten the game, and keep Jacksonville’s offense on the sideline. That approach fits the lower total.

On the other side, Trevor Lawrence is playing some of the best football of his career. He went 10-for-14 for 210 yards and three touchdowns in just three quarters against Indianapolis, and across his last 13 regular-season games he has thrown 32 touchdowns against only five interceptions. Jacksonville has won four of its last six after a Week 6 loss to the Texans, and head coach Liam Coen has the Jaguars looking like a legitimate AFC contender after a 13-4 division-winning season a year ago.

The Jaguars are not perfectly healthy, though. DaVon Hamilton and Eric Murray are done for the season, and pass rusher Travon Walker is listed as questionable. A banged-up defense that still has to stop Henry is the one real wrinkle for a team laying double digits. Fans looking for a primer on how to bet an NFL slate can check out our NFL betting guide.

A Quiet Rivalry With Some Recent History

This is not a heated rivalry, and the all-time series is close to even. The last meeting came on December 17, 2023, when the Ravens won 23-7, and Baltimore has taken two of the last three. Jacksonville last won the matchup on November 27, 2022, a 28-27 thriller. The Jaguars have not played in Baltimore since 2020, when the Ravens rolled to a 40-14 win. That history is a reminder that the Ravens have usually had the upper hand at home, but those teams had Lamar Jackson.

Prediction and Best Bet

Jacksonville is the better team, healthier at quarterback by a wide margin, and coming off a statement win. Still, double-digit road favorites on a short week do not always cover, especially against a defense that will get extra help from a run-heavy game script. The Jaguars should win, but a slow, grinding game keeps the margin and the total under pressure.

  • Prediction: Jacksonville Jaguars 23, Baltimore Ravens 16
  • Best Bet: Ravens +10 on the spread

Our best bet is Baltimore +10. Ten points is a lot to lay when the opposing offense is built around Derrick Henry and the clock, and a projected seven-point win leaves room to spare. If you prefer the total, the under at 39.5 follows the same game script. Either way, enjoy the Thursday night show, and check our NFL odds page for the latest numbers before kickoff.
