Nobody is going to call this the marquee matchup of the NFL calendar. The Philadelphia Eagles limp into Landover at 2-5 with a five-game losing streak, and the Washington Commanders sit at 1-4-1 after a bye week. So why clear your Sunday night? Because bad records make for great chaos, and this one has a backup quarterback, a hobbled superstar, a rookie wideout with something to prove and the NFC East sitting wide open for whoever stops the bleeding first. Kickoff is 8:20 PM ET on NBC from Northwest Stadium.
The Line Says Washington, the Vibes Say Chaos
The Commanders are favored by about 5.5 points at most books, with a few shops hanging a number as low as 4.5. The total is parked at 40.5, the kind of low number that tells you the market expects a grind. On the moneyline, Washington sits around -250 while Philadelphia returns roughly +210, and FanDuel’s model gives the Commanders a win probability near 68 percent.
That is a lot of respect for a team that has not won since September 27. The reasoning is simple: Washington has the healthier quarterback situation, the rest from the bye and the home field. Philadelphia is without Jalen Hurts for the rest of the season, and the receiver room has been picked apart by injuries.
| Sunday, November 1 at 8:20 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
| Philadelphia Eagles | ![]() +6 (-110) | ![]() +225 | ![]() O 40.5 (-105) |
| Washington Commanders | ![]() -6 (-110) | ![]() -258 | ![]() U 40 (-108) |
Because the number varies from book to book, odds shopping matters here. The gap between a 4.5 and a 5.5 spread is the difference between a clean ticket and a push-heavy night.
Why This Game Is Secretly Fun to Watch
Start with the quarterbacks. Tanner McKee makes his third straight start in place of Hurts, and this time he faces a Commanders defense that blitzes on roughly 44 percent of dropbacks, the second-highest rate in the league. That is a high-wire act for a young passer: beat the blitz and you hit big plays, miss and it gets ugly in a hurry. McKee showed some life against Dallas with three long touchdown drives, and Washington ranks 28th in the league against the pass, which gives him a real chance to move the ball.
On the other sideline, Jayden Daniels is the main attraction. He threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to San Francisco before the bye and keeps defenses guessing with his legs. Washington is also thin up front. Daron Payne is out for the season after a fracture in Friday practice, and Javon Kinlaw is out with a knee injury, so the interior pass rush is compromised. Both teams are down key pieces, and that is exactly the kind of setup that produces weird, watchable football.
Then there are the skill-position storylines. Saquon Barkley is expected to give it a go through hamstring and back issues, and he is averaging 5.7 yards per carry this season. If he is limited, Jaydon Blue and Elijah Mitchell are the only other backs the Eagles have. At receiver, DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks and Britain Covey are all out, which puts the spotlight on rookie Makai Lemon, the first overall pick, who caught seven passes for 67 yards and a touchdown against Dallas. Rookie tight end Eli Stowers and rookie tackle Markel Bell are also getting loud on-the-job training, and Dallas Goedert has quietly become the most trusted target in the building.
The Eagles do have a few things going for them. Their edge rushers, including Greenard, Hunt and Nolan Smith, are all healthy, and Washington’s offensive line has been patched together all season. The flip side is a run defense that gave up 204 yards on the ground to Dallas, and Daniels adds another layer of difficulty by scrambling on and off schedule.
A Rivalry With Plenty of Recent Drama
These teams already met in Week 1, and it was close. Philadelphia won 24-22 at home, but Washington covered as a six-point underdog and the game went over the total of 44. Washington took the meeting before that, winning 24-17 on January 4. Since 2017, including the playoffs, the Eagles are 15-5 against the Commanders and 7-2 at Northwest Stadium, and they have not swept the series since 2023.
The betting trend worth noting is the scoring. The last five meetings between these clubs all went over the total, which is a fun wrinkle when this week’s number is only 40.5. The division race adds extra spice too, because the NFC East is wide open, with the Giants leading the pack, and the Eagles face New York next week.

Prediction and Best Bet
This feels like a game where the better quarterback and the extra week of rest win out, but not by a comfortable margin. Daniels has been strong, Washington is plus-six in turnover differential, and the Eagles have trouble generating explosive plays. Still, Philadelphia’s red-zone offense has been efficient and Barkley, if healthy, can keep the game close. Washington wins, but the Eagles keep it within one score.
- Prediction: Washington Commanders 24, Philadelphia Eagles 20
- Best Bet: Over 40.5 total points
The total is the smart play. The last five head-to-head games all cleared it, both defenses are short-handed up front, and Washington’s pass defense gives McKee room to find production. Even a modest scoring night lands north of 40, so we are leaning Over and enjoying the show.
