Monday Night Football closes out Week 6 in Santa Clara with a matchup that has just about everything a primetime game should: an unbeaten 49ers team that keeps winning in dramatic fashion, a Commanders squad still trying to shake off one of the strangest endings of the season, and a quarterback duel between two of the most exciting players in the sport. Washington (1-3-1) visits San Francisco (5-0) at Levi’s Stadium on Monday, October 19, with kickoff at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN and ABC. If you are looking for a reason to stay up on a Monday night, this one has plenty.
The Line Is Big, but the Story Is Bigger
The 49ers are laying 7.5 points at most books, with Washington at +7.5 (-112) and San Francisco at -7.5 (-108) at FanDuel. The moneyline sits around 49ers -420 and Commanders +330, which translates to roughly a 78 to 80 percent chance for the home side in the eyes of the market. The total is hovering between 50.5 and 52.5 depending on where you shop, with FanDuel at 50.5. Some listings, including ESPN’s, have carried a smaller number than 7.5, and the spread has crept up as the week has gone on, which tells you how the market feels about this unbeaten group. If you want a refresher on how those prices work, our how betting odds work guide breaks it down, and the shopping tip matters here because the total varies by a couple of points from book to book.
History gives a small nudge to the favorite as well. The 49ers are 5-3-1 against the spread in the last nine meetings between these two teams, and the under is 6-3 in those same nine. This season, San Francisco is 4-1 against the spread while the over is 4-1 in Commanders games, so the market has a real tug-of-war between a high-scoring Washington team and a San Francisco side that has been winning a bit of everything.
Purdy’s MVP Push Meets Daniels’ Comeback Tour
The headline attraction is Brock Purdy, who has completed 98 of 142 passes for 1,196 yards and 13 touchdowns with just two interceptions through five games. He has thrown at least two touchdown passes and posted a passer rating of 90.0 or higher in every game, and he is only three touchdown passes shy of 100 for his career. With five more attempts on Monday he also qualifies for the NFL’s all-time career passer rating leaderboard, where his current mark of 105.4 would rank first in league history. Add in the fact that Purdy is sitting at +300 for MVP at FanDuel, second behind only Josh Allen at +250, and you have a quarterback playing for more than just a sixth win.
On the other side is Jayden Daniels, who returned from an elbow injury in last week’s 27-27 overtime tie with the Giants and looked like himself, piling up 302 total yards with 199 passing, 103 rushing and two rushing touchdowns. That tie came with a chaotic finish, after Washington let the clock run down with no timeout in the closing seconds, a moment that had head coach Dan Quinn fuming on the sideline. The Commanders also beat Seattle 33-31 back in Week 3, so there is real upside in this offense when everything clicks. The Commanders rush for 139.6 yards per game, sixth in the league, and Daniels is the most dangerous runner on the roster, which makes him the single biggest wild card on the field.
Injuries, Missing Pieces and Who Might Still Pop
San Francisco will be without pass rusher Nick Bosa (calf) and wide receiver Deebo Samuel (hamstring), and linebacker Dre Greenlaw’s suspension was upheld, so he sits as well. Mike Evans is listed as questionable with a ribs injury and Achilles soreness after not practicing this week, and he leads the team with 24 catches for 326 yards and three touchdowns. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk is expected back, Christian McCaffrey practiced fully with no designation, and George Kittle is still around to give Purdy a safety valve. Defensively, the unit forced four takeaways and five sacks in the 32-29 win over Seattle.
Washington has its own list to manage. Running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt is out with a groin injury, which means Austin Ekeler and Rachaad White should split carries, and both are limited but carry no designation. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs (hamstring) is questionable after limited practices Friday and Saturday, while Terry McLaurin has no designation. The secondary is thin, with safeties Percy Butler, Tyler Owens and Nick Cross all questionable. The defense is the real concern, giving up 29.8 points per game, 30th in the NFL, and opponents have scored touchdowns on 83.3 percent of their red zone drives. Against an offense that scores 30.8 points per game and has put up 89 of its 154 points after halftime, that is a stressful recipe.
Fireworks, Hall of Famers and Other Reasons to Tune In
Even if the point spread does not move you, the atmosphere should. This is the first primetime game of the season at Levi’s Stadium and a celebration of the franchise’s 80th anniversary, with 94 former players returning for Alumni Weekend and a drone show planned. Linebacker Keena Turner, who won four Super Bowls in an 11-year career with San Francisco, is being inducted into the 49ers Hall of Fame at halftime, and fans can expect plenty of pyro and fireworks on scoring plays, plus a postgame celebration if the home team wins.
There is also a bit of history riding on the result. The 49ers are 55-32 all-time on Monday Night Football and are currently tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most wins in NFL history on Monday nights. A victory would give them 56 and sole possession of the record. Prediction and Best Bet
San Francisco is the better team by almost every measure, and the home crowd, the ceremonies and the Monday night spotlight all tilt toward a big night. The 49ers rank near the top of the league in net yards per play, EPA per play and success rate, and their offense is balanced enough to survive without Samuel and Bosa. Washington can keep it competitive for a while, especially if Daniels turns a few scrambles into chunk plays, but the defense has not shown it can get stops and the offense ranks 29th on third down. Expect Purdy to find Evans (if he plays) or Kittle for a couple of big gains, McCaffrey to finish a drive or two in the red zone, and the 49ers to pull away after halftime, as they have all season.
- Prediction: 49ers 30, Commanders 20
- Best Bet: 49ers -7.5 on the spread
A 10-point projected margin leaves a little cushion past the key number, and the 49ers have covered in four of their five games this season against a Washington defense that is 30th in points allowed. Take the 49ers at -7.5 and enjoy the fireworks.
