Week 1 of the NFL season saves its best game for last. The Denver Broncos head to Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night to face the Kansas City Chiefs in a season opener that plays more like a conference championship rematch than a Week 1 formality. Two of the sport’s most compelling quarterbacks are both stepping back onto the field for the first time since suffering serious injuries in the same brutal stretch of games last winter, and the league couldn’t have scripted a better return party. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET on ABC and ESPN, with the Broncos in their Summit White uniforms for the occasion.

If you only watch one Week 1 game all year, this is the one. Here’s why Broncos-Chiefs is appointment viewing, what the odds say, and how to think about betting it.

Mahomes and Nix Both Return From Injury, and the Whole League Is Watching

Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL late last season and never got back on the field, watching from the sideline as Kansas City stumbled to a 6-11 finish and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014. He fully participated in the offseason program and training camp, but Andy Reid held him out of every preseason snap as a precaution. Reid has since said there’s “a pretty good chance” Mahomes starts Monday barring any last-minute setback, which is about as close to a green light as it gets for the two-time MVP.

On the other sideline, Bo Nix is dealing with his own comeback story. Nix broke his ankle in Denver’s divisional-round win over Buffalo last January, then needed a minor cleanup procedure in April before being fully cleared. He enters 2026 coming off a season where he threw for 3,163 yards and 25 touchdowns, and the Broncos are counting on him to pick up right where he left off. Throw in a new offensive coordinator in Davis Webb and a fresh set of weapons, and there’s a lot riding on Nix’s ankle holding up under playoff-caliber pressure in Week 1.

Both storylines alone would be worth tuning in for. Having them collide in the same primetime window is a gift.

The Odds, and Why the Market Isn’t Sold on Kansas City

Vegas has the Chiefs favored, but not by much. The line opened around Kansas City -2.5 and has ticked up slightly to Chiefs -3 in some markets, with the total sitting near 43.5. Moneyline bettors are looking at roughly Chiefs -150 to -155 and Broncos around +124 to +130, depending on the book.

A field-goal spread for a home favorite coming off a missed-playoffs season, hosting a division rival that beat them twice last year, tells you the market respects Denver here. Books also have to price in real uncertainty around Mahomes’ conditioning after a full offseason without live preseason reps, which is likely part of why the number hasn’t moved further toward Kansas City despite the marquee return. Weapons, Trenches, and the X-Factor Up Front

Denver enters with real swagger on defense. Vance Joseph’s unit led the NFL in sacks by a wide margin last season, and that pass rush lines up against a Chiefs offensive line that could be without starting left tackle Josh Simmons, who is dealing with a back injury. If Simmons sits, undrafted rookie Khalil Benson could be tasked with protecting Mahomes’ blind side in his first game action since the injury — a tough ask against arguably the best pressure defense in the league.

Kansas City countered by adding running back Kenneth Walker III, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, in free agency from Seattle, giving Reid a workhorse to lean on if Mahomes needs to ease back into full mobility. Denver, meanwhile, added receiver Jaylen Waddle to pair with Courtland Sutton, giving Nix two legitimate big-play targets on the outside for the first time in his career.

Denver Owns the Recent History

Kansas City still leads the all-time series 73-59, but that number tells you almost nothing about where this rivalry stands right now. The Broncos swept the season series in 2025, beating the Chiefs 22-19 at home in November and 20-13 on the road at Arrowhead on Christmas Day — Denver’s first season sweep of Kansas City since 2014 and its first win at Arrowhead since 2015. That’s three straight wins over Kansas City for Denver overall, a stretch that would have sounded absurd during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run years.

Add in the entertainment value off the field: Peyton and Eli Manning will be back on the ManningCast for the alternate broadcast on ESPN2, while Joe Buck and Troy Aikman call the main feed on ABC/ESPN. Between the quarterback comeback narratives, the uniform reveal, and two full broadcast options, this is the rare Week 1 game with something for every kind of fan.

Prediction and Best Bet

Denver’s defensive line advantage against a shaky Chiefs offensive tackle situation feels like the deciding factor here. Mahomes returning from a serious knee injury with zero live preseason snaps, against the league’s best pass rush from a year ago, is a tough opening assignment even for a former MVP. Nix, healthier and with more weapons than he’s ever had, should be able to lean on Sutton and Waddle to move the ball efficiently and keep Denver’s offense on schedule. First-time bettors on this one should give our NFL betting guide a look before locking in a pick.

  • Prediction: Denver Broncos 24, Kansas City Chiefs 20
  • Best Bet: Broncos +2.5/+3 on the spread

Denver has already shown it can win at Arrowhead, and with the pass rush mismatch working in its favor early in Mahomes’ return, the points feel like enough cushion to like the Broncos here.
