The Buffalo Bills (1-0) were able to battle back in a surprisingly tough game in week one. They trailed 7-0 after the 1st quarter and were down 17-3 last in the 1st half. Josh Allen was able to score on a 7-yard run in the final seconds of the half and took the momentum into the locker room.
Allen hit Mack Hollins and then Khalil Shakir for a touchdown each in the 3rd quarter to take a 24-17 lead into the 4th quarter. After another Allen rushing touchdown, the Bills led 31-20 with under 9 minutes to go. DeeJay Dallas of Arizona then took the proceeding kickoff back 96 yards for an answering touchdown to make things interesting again. After a late Matt Prater field goal, the Bills defense was able to thwart the comeback drive late in the game by Kyler Murray, giving them a 34-28 victory.
The Miami Dolphins (1-0) also had a tough battle in week one. They trailed the 14-0 early after Travis Etienne and Brian Thomas Jr. scored to start the game. At the break, it was 17-7. Late in the 3rd quarter, Tua hit Tyreek Hill on an 80-yard touchdown connection that cut the lead to 3. In the 4th, the Dolphins' defense shut down Trevor Lawrence and company and the Miami offense was able to tie things with a Jason Sanders field goal before going ahead on another field goal with just 4 seconds remaining to pick up the win.
The Bills struggled early against an Arizona offense that is a sizable jump down from what this Miami offense can do. While they struggled to get going against the Jaguars, we expect them to build off the more productive 2nd half that they put together.
Josh Allen got dinged up a bit in his hand late in the Buffalo win and while he says it is not a concern, it does add to the vulnerability of the Buffalo offense to keep pace with Miami.
We like the way Mike McDaniel has always prepared his teams early in the season and think they will protect their home field in this one by covering the number.
Miami is 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games played in September.
Miami is Miami are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games when playing as the favorite.
