We are BACK for another Thursday Night NFL matchup! They keep bringing us good rivalry matchups on Thursdays as New England heads to East Rutherford to face the Jets and Aaron Rogers.
I expect a methodical, slow-paced defensive game that features two of the NFL’s premier cornerbacks. We should see a heavy dose of the running game as well as numerous defensive stops in this one.
Wilson has his work cut out for him, going up against one of the top cornerbacks in the league, who usually finds success shutting down opposing star receivers. Christian Gonzalez has been very good to start his career, but the Patriots are coming off quite possibly one of their worst performances in a long time.
Patriots allowed Metcalf to go for 10-129 and Smith-Njigba to go 12-117, some busted zone coverages and miscommunications allowed this. The Jets will have to draw up some slick routes for Wilson to find space for Rogers to find him. The passing game is important for the Jets to keep attention off Hall in the backfield.
Wilson has 6 and 4 receptions on 11 and 6 targets, both games totaling over 55 receiving yards, which could be enough to be the most in this game. I do believe this will be a defensive battle for most of the game, but Wilson has fared better against the Patriots playing at home vs away.
In his last 2 home games against the Patriots, he has 6 and 5 receptions on 7 and 9 targets. In those two games, he had 115 and 48 receiving yards. I do believe he has a good chance to reach 40-50 today, if not go for more tonight.
Rhamondre Stevenson has been the definition of a workhorse over his last 5 games. In 4 of his last 5 games, he has eclipsed 20+ rushing attempts, hitting 20, 21, 25, and 21. This season he has 25 and 21 so far and I do not expect the Patriots to just abandon the run tonight.
The Jets allowed 17 rushing attempts last week to Tony Pollard and the Titans, and in week 1 they allowed 28 carries to Jorda Mason of the 49ers. The Patriots are set up to be run first behind Jacoby Brisset as he is not the gunslinger type of player.
The Patriots like to play defense, keep games close, and pound the rock. The Jets so far this season do not look like a team poised to run away from too many teams on the scoreboard. If the Patriots can keep this a 1 score game, they will continue to find rushing attempts, and I think they do just that.
