Todd Pletcher Becomes Seventh Trainer in History to Reach 6,000 Career Wins

Todd Pletcher etched his name deeper into thoroughbred racing history on Saturday, notching the 6,000th victory of his career in the 14th and final race on Whitney Day at Saratoga Race Course. The milestone win came courtesy of Versailles Road, a 3-year-old son of Quality Road, who rallied down the stretch under jockey Manny Franco to take an allowance optional claimer as the sun dipped below the Spa’s grandstand.

The 59-year-old Hall of Famer becomes just the seventh trainer in North American history to reach 6,000 wins, joining an elite group that includes Steve Asmussen, Dale Baird, Jerry Hollendorfer, Jack Van Berg, King Leatherbury, and Scott Lake. Pletcher is already the all-time leader in career purse earnings among North American trainers, with horses under his care collecting roughly $526 million over the course of his career.

There was no more appropriate venue for the achievement than Saratoga, where Pletcher has built one of the most dominant résumés in the sport’s history. He has topped or co-topped the Saratoga trainer standings 15 times, and has racked up 115 graded stakes victories at the historic upstate New York track, including 48 Grade 1 wins. At the end of the day, he’s a little underappreciated. He has a little Tim Duncan in him… he just won championships. No emotion. He just won championships.”

Beyond Saratoga, Pletcher has piled up training titles at Gulfstream Park, Belmont Park, Aqueduct, Keeneland, and Monmouth Park. His overall graded stakes tally sits at 844 wins, 211 of them at the Grade 1 level, and he also holds a Grade 2 victory in Dubai from Coal Front’s 2019 Godolphin Mile that isn’t included in the official 6,000-win figure.

Racing has always run in the family for Pletcher. His father, Jake, was himself a graded stakes-winning trainer, and Todd has credited his wife, Tracy, and their three children, Hannah, Kyle, and Payton, with supporting him throughout a career that has spanned nearly 30 years in the industry.
