Sporttrade, the Philadelphia-based betting exchange that launched in New Jersey in 2022, has announced it is exiting the US sports betting market. All wagering on the platform will cease on May 25, 2026, for New Jersey customers, who must also withdraw their funds by that date. Users in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, and Virginia have until June 25, 2026 to withdraw, and platform access will be removed for all customers on June 26.

The company shared the news publicly in mid-May without providing a specific reason for the closure, though it teased a possible rebrand with the message “Stay tuned for what’s next.” In recent months, Sporttrade had acknowledged growing pressure from prediction markets as competition intensified in the regulated US sports betting landscape.

A Pivot Toward Prediction Markets

The timing of Sporttrade’s exit aligns with the company’s broader strategic pivot. In February 2026, Sporttrade submitted Designated Contract Market and Derivatives Clearing Organization applications with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, seeking approval to operate in the prediction markets space. The company has not yet received CFTC approval for those applications, but the move signals its intention to compete in a sector that has grown dramatically over the past year.

Prediction market platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket have seen valuations surpass those of major regulated sportsbooks. Sporttrade’s exchange-based model — which allowed users to trade against each other rather than against a house — was positioned as an innovative alternative to traditional sportsbooks when it launched. But the company struggled to build sufficient liquidity and user volume to compete with established operators in the states where it was licensed.

What Existing Users Need to Do

Users who have funds in their Sporttrade accounts should act before the relevant deadlines. New Jersey customers must withdraw by May 25. Customers in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, and Virginia must withdraw by June 25. Any remaining balances after the June 26 platform shutdown will be mailed to users via check at their address on file.

For bettors looking for exchange-based or competitive odds alternatives, options remain available on the betting exchanges still operating in the US market. The closure adds to a pattern of consolidation in US sports betting, where smaller operators and niche platforms have found it increasingly difficult to sustain operations against the dominant market share held by FanDuel and DraftKings. Players in states like New Jersey have a wide range of alternative licensed sportsbooks available to move their action.
