Phillies vs. Twins Prediction: Jesus Luzardo Looks to Complete the Sweep at Target Field

The Philadelphia Phillies roll into Minneapolis with a chance to put a stranglehold on this weekend series against the Minnesota Twins. Philadelphia took the opener 7-1 on Thursday and now sits at 65-58, holding down second place in the NL East at 8.5 games back of Atlanta, riding a one-game winning streak into Saturday’s 7:10 PM ET first pitch at Target Field. Minnesota, meanwhile, is scuffling at 60-63, third in the AL Central and 3.5 games behind Detroit, having dropped four of its last six.

This is a matchup of a team playing meaningful August baseball against one that’s quietly slipping further out of the Wild Card picture. The Twins have real talent in the lineup, but their rotation has been gutted by injury, and it shows up in the way this series has opened.

Why the Market Isn’t Buying a Twins Bounce-Back

Oddsmakers have Philadelphia as a solid road favorite for Game 2, with the moneyline sitting around -138 to -147 on the Phillies and Minnesota getting anywhere from +128 to +137 as the home underdog. The run line has Philadelphia at -1.5 (+113 to +115) while the Twins sit at +1.5 (-136 to -138) to cover, and the total is set at 8 runs, with the over slightly favored at -115.

That line makes sense given the pitching matchup. Jesus Luzardo takes the ball for Philadelphia and has been arguably the best starter in the National League over his last several turns, while Minnesota counters with rookie right-hander Connor Prielipp, who’s still finding his footing at the big-league level. Bettors weighing this one should check our MLB betting guide before deciding how to attack the number. The gap between the two arms is the biggest reason the runline and moneyline both lean so heavily toward the Phillies.

Luzardo’s Second-Half Surge Meets a Thin Twins Rotation

Luzardo has been nothing short of dominant of late. He’s 10-5 with a 3.32 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP, and 176 strikeouts across 143.2 innings this season, and over his last seven starts he’s been even better — 6-1 with a 2.04 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 70.2 innings. His strikeout total ranks fifth in all of baseball, and he’s been particularly nasty on the road this year, posting a 2.01 ERA away from Citizens Bank Park compared to 4.63 at home. That road split bodes well for him Saturday night at Target Field.

Prielipp, by contrast, is 3-5 with a 4.79 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in his rookie campaign, and he’s operating without much of a supporting cast behind him. Minnesota’s rotation has been decimated — Joe Ryan just went down with a strained glute, Pablo López is out for the year after Tommy John surgery, Mick Abel is questionable for the rest of the season following elbow surgery, and both David Festa and Mike Paredes are also lost for the year. That’s five starting pitchers off the roster, forcing the Twins to lean on inexperienced arms exactly when they need stability most.

Offensively, Minnesota still has some thump. Byron Buxton, back after a stint on the IL with a hip impingement, is hitting .263 with 25 home runs and an .863 OPS, and Royce Lewis has chipped in 13 homers with a .740 OPS while splitting time between third base and first. But this isn’t a lineup that’s been able to consistently bail out a beleaguered pitching staff, and Minnesota’s minus-38 run differential on the season reflects that imbalance.

Other Game Picks

Philadelphia counters with a lineup that has plenty of thunder of its own. Kyle Schwarber leads the way with 33 home runs and a .534 slugging percentage, Bryce Harper is hitting .255 with 23 homers and a .360 on-base percentage, and Trea Turner has provided steady table-setting at the top with a .250 average and 16 homers. The Phillies did lose Thursday’s series opener’s counterpart matchup comfortably, cruising to a 7-1 win, and they’ll look for more of the same offensive balance against a taxed Twins bullpen that’s also been without key relievers like Cole Sands and Anthony Banda for extended stretches.

Health-wise, Philadelphia has absorbed its own hits — Adolis García and Brad Keller are both out for the season, and catcher Rafael Marchán is working his way back from knee tendinitis on a rehab assignment — but none of those absences touch the players who matter most in this specific matchup.

Prediction and Best Bet

With Luzardo pitching some of the best baseball of his career and Minnesota’s rotation stretched dangerously thin, Philadelphia should be well-positioned to move to 2-0 in this series. The Twins’ lineup has enough power to make things interesting, but asking Prielipp to match Luzardo pitch-for-pitch is a tall order given the current form gap between the two.

  • Prediction: Philadelphia Phillies 6, Minnesota Twins 3
  • Best Bet: Phillies on the moneyline

Given Luzardo’s dominant recent stretch and the road-heavy strength of his splits this season, laying the moneyline price is the cleanest way to back Philadelphia without needing to clear the extra run and a half required by the spread.
