Rays win game 4

The Milwaukee Brewers are one win from the first championship in franchise history, but the Tampa Bay Rays have shown they will not go quietly. Game 5 of the World Series is set for Wednesday, October 28, at 8:00 PM ET at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, with the Brewers leading the series 3-1 and the Rays playing for their season.

Tuesday night’s Game 4 was an all-timer. Cooper Pratt, a rookie shortstop, hit a solo homer in the top of the 12th inning to put Milwaukee up 3-2 and within three outs of a title. Tampa Bay then scored twice in the bottom of the inning, with Jonny DeLuca and pinch-hitter Ben Williamson both delivering run-scoring singles, to win 4-3 and force one more game. Three of the first four games in this series have been decided by a single run, and the lone blowout was Milwaukee’s 10-1 win in Game 3.

A Short Price on the Brewers and a Starter Question in Tampa

The market sees Milwaukee as a moderate favorite. Sportsbooks have the Brewers at roughly -148 on the moneyline against the Rays at about +126, with the total set at 6.5 runs and the run line at Brewers -1.5. That price reflects one very clear edge: the Brewers know exactly who is pitching, and the Rays do not.

Tampa Bay had been expected to lean on Nick Martinez, but he threw two innings and 33 pitches of relief in Game 4, which all but takes him off the table. Drew Rasmussen pitched Game 2 and would be on short rest, so the Rays are likely headed for a bullpen game with everything on the line. That uncertainty is the main reason the number is not even higher on Milwaukee. For anyone comparing prices before first pitch, it helps to understand how betting odds work so you can see exactly what -148 asks you to risk.

The Miz Against a Patchwork Bullpen

Jacob Misiorowski gets the ball for Milwaukee, and the numbers are staggering. In the regular season he went 16-5 and led the majors with a 1.80 ERA, 252 strikeouts, a 0.80 WHIP, and a .157 opponents’ batting average. He has been just as tough away from home, posting a 2.15 ERA over 14 road starts. In this postseason he is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA across three starts, and he allowed one run on four hits over five innings against these same Rays in Game 1, a 3-2 Brewers win. He will be working on four days of rest after being warmed in the bullpen, but never used, in Game 4.

Tampa Bay’s problem is arithmetic. The Rays used all five members of their regular rotation over the past four nights, and the bullpen absorbed a 12-inning marathon that ended after midnight. Game 5 starts roughly 19 and a half hours later. Even with Williamson and DeLuca providing a spark, the Rays have allowed three or more runs in five straight playoff games, and a taxed relief corps facing a lineup that can score in bunches, as it did with an eight-run outburst in Game 3, is a tough spot. Third baseman Junior Caminero also left Game 4 late with a foot issue, though he has said he plans to play.

History is another hurdle. Tampa Bay became just the fifth of 26 teams to fall behind 3-0 in a World Series and win Game 4, and the previous four all lost Game 5. No team has ever forced a Game 6 from that position, which is why the Rays’ nothing-to-lose mindset may be their best weapon. Where the Value Is in Game 5

If you believe the Brewers win, the moneyline is expensive and the run line at Brewers -1.5 is the plus-money alternative, but that is a tricky play in a series where three of four games have been one-run affairs. The more interesting angle is the total. Misiorowski’s run suppression and the 6.5 number both point low, though the uncertainty around the Rays’ pitching plan and the potential for a bullpen game to get exposed late is a real counterweight. The Under has split 2-2 in this series.

The Rays at +1.5 is the safer cover play for anyone who thinks Tampa Bay has found its footing after Game 4. Their lineup came through in the clutch, and a manufactured run or two against Milwaukee’s overworked high-leverage relievers is entirely plausible. Still, asking a bullpen game to outduel the best pitcher in baseball over nine innings is a lot, and the Brewers had won eight straight postseason games before Tuesday’s loss.

Prediction and Best Bet

Milwaukee has the better starter by a wide margin, the better situation on the mound, and the series lead. Tampa Bay has the home crowd, momentum, and a manager willing to throw every arm he has. Expect a low-scoring, tense game, but with the Miz setting the tone early, the Brewers should find a way to close the door.

  • Prediction: Brewers 4, Rays 2
  • Best Bet: Brewers on the moneyline

The Brewers are the right side because the pitching mismatch is the biggest edge on the board, and the Rays’ tired bullpen simply has fewer good answers than it did a night ago.
